The Lib Dems' candidate in the Stoke Central By Election is the Muslim doctor, Zulfiqar Ali, and his election agent has written to Staffordshire Police to complain about messages being sent by certain Labour activists that target the constituency's Muslim population. (There is also a Muslim standing as an Independent at the By Election.)

The following SMS was sent anonymously yesterday:

It is, of course, intended to "persuade" electors against voting for Paul Nuttall, the UKIP leader, and for the two above-mentioned Muslim candidates and "recommending" they vote for Snell, the (sexist) Labour candidate. I suspect that the originator of that text message is the Labour activist Navid Hussain, seen here with Snell:

who appears to have posted this WhatsApp message:

and who posted this on Facebook last week:

The Lib Dems have, quite rightly, complained to the Labour Party, the Police, the Returning Officer and the city's electoral services officials:

"I am writing about several text messages reported to us by members of the public which appear to be distributed in large numbers in support of your candidate and your campaign.

I am concerned by these text messages for two reasons, firstly about the Representation of the People Act 1983 and secondly about the ‘Guidance on political campaigning‘ issued by the Information Commissioners Office.

1 – I am sure that you realise that the religious nature of one of these messages could also be deemed to be covered by the ruling on “undue spiritual influence” in the matter of a mayoral election for the London Borough of Tower Hamlets held on 22 May 2014 when the Labour Party were the victims of such tactics.

2 – These text messages are clearly election material in support of your candidate Gareth Snell as they meet the criteria for an elections expense set out in section 90ZA (6) of the Representation of the People Act “In this Part and in Part 3 of this Act, any reference (in whatever terms) to promoting or procuring a candidate’s election at an election includes doing so by prejudicing the electoral prospects of another candidate at the election”. They are clearly aimed at stopping people voting for my candidate Dr Zulfiqar Ali as well as others.

3 – I am sure that you are aware that such text messages under the ICO guidance should only be sent where the individual has consented to contact of that sort from the organisation for those purposes. Therefore, we have serious concerns about the origin of access to these phone numbers and whether the necessary permissions and opt out procedures have been followed…

    Yours sincerely,

    Ian Horner, Election Agent

CC: David Mullington, Staffordshire Police; Fiona Ledden, Acting Returning Officer; Gina Jones, Electoral Services, Stoke-on-Trent City Council"

Frankly, the local Labour Party need not have bothered: Paul Nuttall is on course to self-destruct having been caught-out lying about Hillsborough (twice) and being investigated by the Police for alleged electoral fraud. He apparently no longer lives at the address he hastily rented in Stoke and his web site is down. If there was ever a seat Farage should have contested and be the favourite to win, Stoke was it, instead Ukip has sullied its brand with a lying chancer.

UKIP is finished. Surplus to requirements in its present form, and becoming an embarrassment.

Mr. Farage has accomplished what he set out to do.

As for the Islamists, well, they are continuing to behave as they do in their own stone-age countries... as anticipated.

One day the bleeding hearts will wake up.

Not followed this one too closely,
Is it really UKIP shooting themselves in the foot?
Or is it the establishment gunning for the guy and trying to destroy UKIP...

People love to hate UKIP, bit of both I think, they always seem to be in the news for something stupid they have done.

Paul Nuttall wears brown shoes, never trust a man in brown shoes :)
