Right I'm on edge now, no pop-ups so far. Sorry I was using Chrome, is it because it's not the latest version or not? And how do I know I'm using the latest version?
Just recently I have received good ones from "What's App," "PayPal" "FedEx" and the "HRMC" which by the way is definitely a fishing email if they do not include your name. It is very easy to see how some people are caught out.
With Chrome you are pretty much always on the latest version they update it in the background all the time. Microsoft update Edge in the background and to start with it has fewer vulnerabilities that other modern browsers it is also quite stable now, it had its problems in the early days but I have stuck with it for quite a while. Yeah you need to get something to clean the PC now, try Avira and also try downloading Piriform CCleaner https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download and select the free edition. Once downloaded let it clean your whole PC it is not an antivirus but it can remove lots of junk from your system particularly cookies.
It is probably a Tech Support popup scam looking to get you to hand over details that will let them take full control of the computer.
Yep. Seen one that supposedly came from one user in our accounts team to the MD, totally bogus but required a second read of the email to confirm that.
as a slight off topic--ive been getting right margin "advets" on facebook saying " so-and so" has died--a famous person-----i clicked on it--only to have a series of pop ups telling my my puter is infected--and if i dont do as they say--all sorts will befall me. hers a few photo shots. i have to shut down to escape it .
You need Malwarebytes Anti Malware (free version) (version 2). http://filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/ Download Malwarebytes and scan your system, it will take a while, it takes about an hour to scan my laptop, it will find any malicious browser add-ons and PUPs, (potentially unwanted programs) that might have been downloaded at the same time as you downloaded a program you wanted. A PUP might be a little browser add-on that pops up advertisments, or it might be something more malicious, Malwarebytes checks anything it finds, and gets rid of anything bad. This is in addition to using a virus checker and CCleaner. The most recent version of Malwarebytes (version 3) contains real time scanning, I have not used this, I suggest using (version 2) from the filehippo link above.
Duh I should have said that, I use it regularly, it's the best bleedin cleaner there is Only thing is I would suggest that he does not download from filehippo personally I don't trust those kind of sites, he should get it direct from Malwarebytes https://www.malwarebytes.com/ it is free from there anyway.
Good point, I had originally posted the Malwarebytes website, however the current (version 3) software appears to have been rewritten with a new interface and new features which include a free two week trial of their real time premium scanning. It was only updated recently. Version two in the one that I have been using, it works well as a stand alone scan. I have not yet seen any reviews of (version 3), I would be interested in any comparison.
