FILIPINO DEVOTEES NAILED LIKE JESUS CHRIST ON THE CROSS, CRUCIFIXION A PART OF HOLY WEEK TRADITION
    AIMEE AVILA

Holy week in the Philippines is widely observed by the population and taken seriously by devout Catholics. Commemorating Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection is a practice of Filipinos during the Lenten season. For some people, church visits and following Jesus’ way of the cross would suffice. But there are several individuals who would subject themselves to the pain of crucifixion. And more often than not, those who have signed up for being nailed on the cross like Jesus Christ make this activity their yearly vow. Although it is supposed to be a solemn season for everyone, it turns out that the crucifixion can draw so much attention during the holy week.

Some parts of the country are known for crucifixion activities in their region or area. Marinduque, a province in the Philippines, even has a festival called the Moriones Festival. It is annually held during the holy week and people from different parts of the country and the world come to witness the event.

Lonely Planet explains that the festival began in 1807 when a priest “organised a play based on the story of Longinus, one of the Roman centurions assigned to execute Christ.” His blind right eye was able to regain vision because of Christ’s blood during the crucifixion. Hence, “Longinus instantly proclaimed his faith, whereupon he was chased around town, captured and summarily beheaded.” People taking part in this festival are dressed like Roman soldiers and go around town.

“Throughout the festival week, moriones take to the streets and run amok, engaging in sword fights, dances and sneaky pranks on bystanders, with Longinus hiding behind spectators before undergoing a mock beheading and his ‘lifeless’ body being paraded around town.”

Other provinces and regions in the Philippines also organize the same kind of event on holy week except that it is more serious and with flagellation involved during the procession. In San Fernando, Pampanga, several individuals who sign up to be Jesus on the cross consider such act as their vow of sacrifice or what they call as “panata.”

Devotees walk for miles barefoot while whipping their backs before the staging of the crucifixion. Marvin Tao, an electrician, told the Philippine Star in the past that he started doing it when his mother got sick with kidney problems. “I vowed and prayed to God so that she could be cured,” Marvin recounts.

This practice has been called out by the Catholic Church in the Philippines for “mixing Catholic devotion to folk belief.” But like Moriones Festival, the event has been flocked by spectators not only from other parts of the Philippines but other countries as well. An American tourist, Tracey Sengillo, has said that those who commit themselves to such practice may really have such strong dedication to it. This event was able to gather a large crowd of 4,000 people including foreigners. Devotees who have been crucified on the cross are given medical attention as soon as the re-enactment of the crucifixion is done.

The local government of Pampanga shares that such tradition started in 1955 with the staging of the way of the cross. But actual crucifixion only happened later on in 1962. Artemio Anoza was the one who played Jesus Christ. Anoza was known as a quack doctor whose dream was to become a spiritual leader.

The crucifixion tradition and practice are done in various parts of the Philippines during the holy week. Although very controversial in nature, the Filipino population has been exposed to this practice. In some parts of the world, there were attempts to also stage the crucifixion of Jesus on the cross but to no avail. Christian Timesreported that in Manchester, an attempt to raise funds and charge people of £750 for “full crucifixion experience” has been cancelled. For them, such practice is considered blasphemous and unsafe. Cathedral Gardens eventually cancelled the show.

jehovahs witnesses believe that jesus was nailed to a post rather than a cross., the watchtower publishing business does not use the image of a cross in any of its publications.

I think I read somewhere about the cross not being accurate, and that crucifixions weren't always (despite the name) on crosses. But whatever the JWs say, I'd just glaze over after a couple of seconds.

Well from the photos you've shown me it looks like paganism and a long shot from what is written in the Bible.

It would appear that these people are brainwashed by the the synagogue of Satan and the worship of idols.

This is how the Philippines has been governed since independence.

Will the divorce law break the back of this yoke or not?

It would depend on the translation of the word "stauros" to determine cross or stake!

Anyone remember the Brit TV personality,Dominic Diamond??
For some reason he told everyone that he was going to Manila to be crucified for real..His family, friends and fans at the time BEGGED him not to do it ...But he ignored them.
After getting a bit of a whipping whilst lugging a big wooden cross through the Manila streets,he finally arrived at the place of his mocked execution...
Then he broke down and wept after watching nine Filipinos take their turn to be whipped and nailed on crosses and realizing that his turn was next, said
    [IMG]
"God wanted me only to pray at the foot of my cross," he sobbed.. Basically,he bottled it at the very last minute.
The Filipino`s laughed..Oh how they laughed!!

Crucify me? Sorry, I've changed my mind!!

It probably seemed a good idea when he punted it to television chiefs. But faced with a cross, a set of 4in nails and a man with a hammer, and surrounded by bleeding self-flagellants, Dominik Diamond's plans to be crucified during one of Easter's most brutal religious ceremonies literally ended in tears yesterday.

The Scottish DJ, presenter and tabloid columnist, who had travelled with a television crew in tow to the Philippines village of San Pedro Cutud to take part in the bloody annual re-enactment of Christ's crucifixion, took fright and fled when it came to his turn to be nailed to his cross in front of a 10,000-strong crowd.

Diamond, 37, knelt and prayed before dissolving into tears, then was hastily driven away by ambulance to jeers from spectators.

Nine Filipinos had already undergone the ritual to atone for sins, or give thanks for good fortune, by trooping up a hill in searing sun carrying huge crosses. They were flanked by frenzied penitents who whipped their backs with bamboo and rope flails. Each was briefly nailed, with only one subsequently requiring medical treatment.

MOSCOW (AP) -- Russia's Supreme Court on Thursday banned Jehovah's Witnesses from operating anywhere in the country, accepting a request from the justice ministry that the religious organization be considered an extremist group.

The court ordered the closure of the group's Russian headquarters and its 395 local chapters, as well as the seizure of its property.

The Interfax news agency on Thursday quoted Justice Ministry attorney Svetlana Borisova in court as saying that Jehovah's Witnesses pose a threat to Russians.

"They pose a threat to the rights of citizens, public order and public security," she told the court.

Borisova also said Jehovah's Witnesses' opposition to blood transfusions violates Russian health care laws.

Yaroslav Sivulsky, a spokesman for Jehovah's Witnesses in Russia, said in a statement they are "greatly disappointed by this development and deeply concerned about how this will affect our religious activity."

Jehovah's Witnesses said they would appeal the ruling.

Jehovah's Witnesses claim more than 170,000 adherents in Russia. The group has come under increasing pressure over the past year, including a ban on distributing literature deemed to violate Russia's anti-extremism laws.

Human Rights Watch criticized Thursday's decision as an impediment to religious freedom in Russia.

"The Supreme Court's ruling to shut down the Jehovah's Witnesses in Russia is a terrible blow to freedom of religion and association in Russia," said Rachel Denber, deputy Europe and Central Asia director at Human Rights Watch.

The rights group also expressed concern that if the ruling takes effect, Jehovah's Witnesses could face criminal prosecution and punishment ranging from fines to prison time.

You know that one of these days they're going to be right don't you? Can't fault their resilience and chutzpah.

Perhaps they could have taken a leaf from Winston's book, and not been so sure of themselves

jehovahs witnesses--a.k.a the watchtower society,a.k.a the international bible students association. is a high control cult operating pretty much world wide.

what most outsiders dont know is the cult practices shunning--that is anyone who leaves--like i did nearly 50 years ago----risks being cut off and ostracised by friends and family. it happened to me--and more recently to my son--who quit in recent years. his mother has nothing to do with him--regards him as dead.

any jehovahs witness--or ex jw--reading this is welcome to contact me by private message and i can link you to numerous support groups if you need it.

meantime heres a photo of my personal number plate..
