Occasionally foreigners are murdered in the Philippines, and fortunately it doesn't happen very often, but it can happen and I read this article about the incidents that affect some people. The writer makes the following points, I quote:

    • By far, the most common perpetrators are:
    1. the boyfriend of the foreigner’s wife or young girlfriend,
    2. the maid’s boyfriend,
    3. some relative of the girlfriend, wife or the maid.
    4. Ex-employees are another possibility.

There are may more mentioned in the article, so I believe it's a subject that is interesting to talk about here.

I didn't read the full article, but have to say that, you'd be a fool to assume the Philippines is entirely safe. It's a third world country (developing country, as is stated by governments). There's very rich and very poor, anyone who's visited will know this.

I generally take off my watch and leave other valuable items out of site when here. There's no need to provoke a problem!

The stated murders you mention, all i can say is don't be an idiot in a country that doesn't uphold its traffic laws, where bribes are often made with authority.

However, if you do things correctly, you'll minimise the risk.

I appreciate that people here have wife's much their junior, for that i wish them good luck and all the happiness, if done right, both people benefit and can live happily ever after.

I guess my point is, don't be a dick, treat your lady with the respect she deserves. I'm sure most western women won't take care of you the way a Filipina does!

And more importantly, don't assume the girl you've met is genuine from day 1. Analyse the relationship, is she after money, better life? Could she have a boyfriend?

Keep safe guys and i hope you all have happy relationships with your better halves

I agree, common sense is really the order of play for a foreigner in the Philippines and any other developing country for that matter.

    You're a long time dead.

It is wise to make it very clear indeed that nobody will benefit from your demise and that you have no valuables.

I don't want to sound disrespectful but it sometimes felt that because I am white I was fair game to be ripped off...
A nought was often added to the end of the price of something I was buying.
Imaginary charges would be asked for.
It was assumed that I could buy anything I wanted.
And...last but not the least...Hurdles were often put in our way when arranging our marriage only to be told that a 'special' solution was available...at a cost of course. I am talking about senior people here who should have been setting the standard...One from a court and another from the church.

I only felt threatened once but I guess being a big guy helps.
My best advice would be to trust no-one. Even someone you know may surprise you.
Travelling taught me to be aware of the ingenuity of others m and that we don't all think alike.
I heard that someone could be 'permanently dealt with' for 1,000 pesos..

Its called the "long nose tax," the same thing happens in many countries I have been to, its not right but that's the way it is :)

I think 1,000 pesos is too cheap. The Government pays the cops more for murdering drug users, etc. I was asked if i wanted someone removed permanently for 100K but I suspect there was some long nose tax there.

Anecdotally I understood the going rate to be 15k but I've since been told by @graham59 (I think!) that the rate is now 5k (buy one, take two!).

here is a brief summary of the 2017 murder season that has recently ended : http://philippineslifestyle.com/foreigners-murdered-philippines-2017/

this season, actually, not so very many of the murders at all seem to be ones where the finger of suspicion points so very quickly at the wife, or girlfriend. The two Biliran murders I know something about, and it really does seem that with those two, it's foreigners getting in over their heads in local land/property deals and alienating local bigwigs rather than the straight up usual suspect spouse-getting-rid-of-the-old-and-awkward husband angle.

the Canadian who got shot dead in the car with his thirty-years-younger-than-him wife sitting alongside him, well that one, might have been her. Often they do it so the wife is a witness to and therefore 'traumatised' by the murder, or even slightly injured herself in the attack, so people won't think that it's her. The Canadian had considerable assets invested and had built up a successful phone shop all of which of course, automatically goes to her to sell after a short period of mourning, to possibly share with the masked gunman boyfriend that pulled the trigger.

The 2017 season was quite uneventful really. 9 shootings, 1 stabbing, and 1 beheading, quite routine really. 2018's Philippines foreigner murder season kicked off with quite a dramatic one here, in Baclayon, Bohol that looked like a bit of a mafia hit :

    http://www.boholchronicle.com.ph/2018/01/21/retired-us-soldier-shot-dead-in-baclayon/

he was shot dead at 5am while out jogging with no money on him so robbery was not a motive. As usual with these kinds of murders, as soon as they are dead, all these rumours start circulating by the locals about what a dodgy businessman the guy was supposed to be, he was a drug dealer/money lender and so on and that was why he was killed. Exactly like what happened with Harry Doyle's murder, the rumours were spread that time by relatives and friends of Doyle's killers, Doyle's wife and her boyfriend, to try to make a false motive and throw the cops off the scent.

the only reason why foreigner murders are ever solved is when relatives of the victims come out to the Philippines to make a noise and pay the cops to get on the case. Without an inducement, the police won't do anything, to solve these crimes. That is the only reason why the murderers of Stephen Davis in Angeles, Harry Doyle in Surigao, Tony Mcdonald in Manila, and even Tony Gilchrist in Malapascua - even though Tony was shot dead in front of about 6 witnesses who all knew the shooter - are behind bars. Each of them had relatives ready to come out to the Philippines and make inducements to the police,
to expedite the prosecution of the case.

the murderers know this. When the guy is old, and they think he may not have too many relatives back home ready to come out to the Philippines, bust a gut and pay to get justice, that emboldens them to carry out the crime.

The professional killers don`t really give a damn about consequences here as they know the odds of being caught are slim to none..
Only thing paid killers want is half the 5/10k upfront and the other half after the job!
Nothing "emboldens" them more than quick cash.

give them 5,000 to do the killing but don't forget to give them another 150 plus another 100 to get on a bus and buy a mask from a store in a different town. Sometimes, they forget.

here's another one making it #2 of the 2018 murder season, which has got off to a slow start.

    Australian shot dead near Dumaguete
    http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/978930/australian-shot-dead-in-negros-oriental-town

as usual shooting the method chosen.

sketchy information so far but what there is suggests that the missing woman could have known something about the two guys. It doesn't seem as well-planned as the last Baclayon, Bohol one in January (for which AFAIK nobody has so far been arrested for).

no arrests or conviction will happen in this one either unless someone actually makes a complaint, which the dead guy will find difficult to do, and also if somebody goes out to the Philippines and 'encourages' the police to get on with the investigation.

    An eye opening thread.

I wonder who the woman was considered the 'property' of (as some like to describe it over there).

    Jealousy ?

    Business competitor ?

... The usual suspects for motive in such shootings.

It's most unlikely anyone will ever be punished for this, I'll agree.

this one is obviously a lot less accomplished and professional than the last Baclayon one which looks like a very clean hit by comparison.

the guy drove up with the girl on the back, got stopped by the two men, who shot him dead, and then the girl and the guys disappeared, together with the foreigner's motorbike so it looks like a right hack job. There were witnesses apparently and it clearly wasn't as well thought out as January's Bohol murder where there were none. It looks like the identities of all three people who were at the scene with the murdered man are probably known to police. But whether they'll bother to do anything much to catch up with them especially if they decide to run off to Cebu or Manila where they can get lost in a crowd, is another matter.

with most murders of foreigners in the Philippines, the motive is sexual or financial and often both. Sometimes jealousy/sex is not really present and there is a purely financial motive in the crime, with not just murders but non-fatal robberies, but it is never a 'laudable' or semi-excusable financial motive like they want to put a younger sibling through college, their mother is sick, or anything like that. It's always because they want to buy a new motorbike and an expensive Iphone, gamble heavily down the cockpit, or buy lots of booze and drugs.

the typical perpetrator is the actual boyfriend of the foreigner's wife or girlfriend, and sometimes both of them. Next most typical is the boyfriend of the foreigner's maid or helper, and sometimes both of them. They have to know something of his habits. Totally random unplanned attacks and murders of foreigners are pretty rare compared to those. The one who pulls the trigger is always the male one. It is never the female that wields the actual killing tool, however she is often just as guilty as he is.

sometimes, like in the murder of the Scottish seaman John Mcdonald, the girl's Filipino boyfriend killed him without her prior knowledge and she wasn't part of the actual conspiracy. However, later on during the killer's escape and flight, she joined him and moved in with him where he was hiding out. When he was eventually arrested, she was with him.

this one might turn out to be a little like that. The girl on the back of the foreigner's motorbike may not have helped to plan the murder with 'malice aforethought'. But after the deed was done, she went along with it.

I know of two British males (I mean know them personally) that married Filipinas and settled in the Philippines. Both had or have some characteristics in common and some differing characteristics.

One of them spent many years there and encountered many difficulties and tended to try and fight fire with fire. I think that got him down ultimately and he and his wife left the Philippines for good.

The other is the opposite. He loves the Philippines and seems to live a carefree existence.

Why the contrast, I am not certain. My theory is that there is a slight difference in temperament between the two but the guy who really enjoys life out there is considerably wealthier than the other so I do not know if that helps. I gather he does grease palms where necessary. He is also an ex night club bouncer but even they get old at some point.

I trust their stories and have no doubts what they say is true. It is surprising though that they are polar opposites in their findings and experiences.

It pays to be nice to people in a foreign country and be ready to apologize immediately if a wrong has been made. Loss of "face" is a strong Asian character trait.
