Beating Man U 2 -1, Jose not a happy man. Always thought Bristol would make a comeback, it may have taken 40 years...
@Markham.....i think they are talking fubbal. how about admin creating a fubbal section--like the political one---so members can choose to access it --or not. i loathe fubbal.
I don't follow football either, some people are fanatics and English football is a worldwide cult. When talking to locals over a beer in Indonesia once, I told them I was from "Preston near Manchester", and was stunned to find that they knew all about Preston North End, the league position, match results, players, everything. The same has happened in Malaysia as well on more than one occasion. Shame I don't know what they are talking about.
not in the Philippines, it isn't. The Philippines is a soccer free zone. I don't think I've ever seen an impromptu game of soccer going on in the Philippines and unlike in Thailand and Malaysia it is never on the television. Almost nobody has even heard of the big British soccer names, like Manchester United. you see pool halls on every corner. But nobody has ever heard of the sport of snooker in the Philippines either, again totally unlike Thailand and Malaysia. The Philippines is just not an Anglophilic country at all. Not even one tiny little bit. The only thing they know about the UK in the Philippines is that it has a Queen and a royal family, and that they are rich. If you were to really push them, then they might say that the Mr Bean character, which retains popularity, is British. But even that, would be pushing it. Most of them barely have heard of the entire country. It doesn't help that the archipelago has different names, such as Britain, Great Britain, UK, etc. If you say the word 'London' as well, then they may have heard of that. But basically, many people have never heard of it. that is it. Nobody in the Philippines buys any imported products from the UK or recognises any UK brands as being from the UK like cars, phones, or foodstuffs, etc.
A soccer free zone country wouldnt have a national football team if what you say is true, but it isnt and they do. Im not a soccer fan but my team is Man Utd. I went to a christening at a little barangay in Cebu, there was a guy there who came up to me just doing general chit chat. He asked where I lived and I said near Liverpool and not to far away from Manchester. That was it, he started realing off all things Man Utd, far more knowledgeable than me and more current on recent matches and the squad. So football free zone, not what Ive seen.
I have attended two international soccer matches played by the Azarks, one in Bacolod and one in Cebu. Soccer does have a higher profile in the Philippines than it used to, and the national team is no longer the standing joke that it used to be in the ASEAN region where all the other countries previously expected to beat them easily. Nevertheless as a sport, it isn't on the same page as it is in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, etc. You could flick through the Philippines TV channels aimlessly for a year without a soccer game appearing even once. All the sports you'd ever get is basketball, volleyball, pool - not snooker - and cockfighting.
What complete and utter nonsense you write and you're not very good at that either being as you are inconsistent with your sweeping statements. Is that statement an absolute fact or simply a guess on your part? Having lived in the Philippines for almost 9 years, I can tell you that you are completely wrong. I know a number of Filipinos who regularly watch live soccer in the Philippines and I've lost count of the number of replica Man U shirts I've seen during that time.
Who?? The national team's name is Azkals and is one of the longest established teams in Asia; it played its first matches in 1913. In addition to the national team, there are Leagues for both men's and women's soccer. It's time you left, Whippy.
