that is just ridiculous. Filipinos don't tip at all. Usually my haircuts are 35 or 40 and I usually do give 50, and that is generous. A Filipino wouldn't even give that. They'd expect change even if it's only 10 pesos.

I've have heard of idiot foreigners giving 200 for 40-50 peso haircuts, but even 100 is totally ridiculous.

the last haircut I got was in an aircon mall in Lapu-Lapu, quite a classy salon really but it was still only 50 for the most basic haircut and that was all I paid. Normal Filipinos who have almost no contact with foreigners don't expect tips at all and you shouldn't be giving them any, certainly not on that scale, if you give them 100 pesos that is 2.5 times the cost of the service It's like giving a barber 25 quid in the UK for a tenner haircut. Drawing attention to yourself like that is exactly the last thing you should be doing.

Jesus Christ, take a chill pill pal. So I gave a tip to a poor barber, He always does a great job and gives me priority over others waiting. How on earth could one be giving attention to one's self by giving a tip, don't you ever tip the waitress or waiter?

of course tipping ludicrously like that is drawing attention to yourself. 60 pesos to a Filipino is worth what about 10 quid is to a Brit. It's 1.5 times the hourly minimum wage. 60 pesos is not chump change at all.

And I do tip. If I give a barber 50 for a 35 or 40 peso haircut, that is a generous tip.

also I wouldn't want to 'get priority' over others waiting in a barber shop although if there was a whole pile of people in there I wouldn't go in in the first place. There have been times when I've waited like 10 minutes or something for a barber to become free. Why on earth would anybody want to pay a barber to jump the queue? Would you do the same in the UK? What makes you think you should do it in the Philippines?

waitresses I don't really tip certainly not like I would in the UK. Again maybe a 'keep the change' kind of tip like at the barber's, but never more than 20. Ditto taxi drivers (although I almost never use car taxis). If a fare is 85 I'll probably give them 100 even if they haven't done anything in particular to deserve it. But if it's 100, then tough. That 100 is all I'll give them.

habal habal drivers, who I use much more often, I never tip them at all. You have to negotiate a fare in the first place, so what is the point of a tip?

round about Christmas I might give habal habal drivers 10 pesos more than the agreed price. But that is 10 pesos than any Filipino would give them.

Filipinos apart from the very few influenced by foreigners just never tip at all. And I mean NEVER. I knew a girl who worked in a chinoy resto in Iligan city, modest little place, pretty good resto actually. Nice food, but not that expensive. Two could have a pretty nice meal a real spread with plenty of small side dishes to share, and with drinks for about 300-350. No foreign customers and not exactly a plush place, but it got its share of Iligan's more affluent crowd. In three years, she never received a single tip. Not one, and neither did any of the other waitresses. Not even 10 pesos.

There is no tipping culture in the Philippines. Foreigners throwing their money around like idiots is concerning because it has a corrupting effect. You can see in those parts of the Philippines where there's a lot of idiot foreigners, particularly Americans, that do it. Before you know it, everywhere you turn round, everywhere you get served, just because you are white and for no other reason, a tipping expectation develops that doesn't exist in places where there are no foreigners.

Not tipping excessively is nothing to do with being kuripot and everything to do with trying to blend in and not wanting to draw unecessary attention to and making an utterly pointless spectacle of yourself.

Dong, you should really get a life. I made that post tongue in cheek, in this humour section following a joke. I only give tips to barbers who do a decent job and only tip 10 pesos, maybe 15 depends on what I have on me.
I have been coming to Philippines 16 years not had any problems. Married for 16 years and living here.
The only problems are with the tourist who comes here and thinks they know it all, sex tourist are not welcome better to stay in the UK and keep away from my adopted country.
