That's an interesting read @UKDJ , thanks for posting that .

I find it strange to be honest ,that the visit visa is for six months . If an applicant states in their application form that they are planning to stay for two weeks , but then decides to stay for one month , it could possibly count against them in future applications . Even though they have five months of "entitlement " that they haven't taken advantage of .

If doing that is going to result in being refused in a future application , then they might as well go all the way on their visit , and stay for the entire six months , which legally, they are entitled to do.

Does anyone know why UK visit visas are for six months , and has it always been ?

    I agree @OTT ...

I have said before how many people, realistically, can afford a 6 month 'break' from work, as it is irrelevant to UKVI whether or not their Sponsor has undertaken to fully support them during their stay? They still have to prove they can support themselves during their stay, regardless...
Also, it is something of a double-standard that a Filipino has to show ownership of property as part of a Visitor Visa application, but for a Settlement Visa a sponsor has no such onus put upon them!

Yes but if you are only visiting, you need somewhere to return to, if you are applying for a Settlement visa as the name implies you wont be returning, hence no need for the ownership of property in the Philippines or wherever.

my ( now ) wife got a visit visa in 2013 ( 2nd attempt ) she had previously been here on a student visa for 4 years, and returned just before that visa expired.

with her visit visa--she stayed--with me--the full 6 months, returning in jan 14., a couple of days before it expired.

she got her settlement visa in feb 2016.

Two sides to every racist allegation, its just the Guardian rag jumping on a popular flavour of the month anti May campaign.

I think it was 2015 when the U.K. gov streamlined the visitor visa routes from 11 down to the current 4. They also considered the length of duration ofthose 11 and decided that all visit visas would sit at 6 months

My point was that a prospective UK sponsor only has to show 'adequate' (not overcrowded) accommodation - whether rented, mortgaged or even living with parents - to satisfy UKVI for a Settlement Visa, whereas it is implied that a foreign visitor has to show some form of 'investment' in property to obtain a Visitor Visa...

Well someone has to give a balanced view of how it really is, in response to the Daily Fail's racist, xenophobic rants and totally sycophantic pro-May stance.

The report is about as balanced as a mouse sitting on the opposite end of a seesaw to a donkey.
As often is the case with the Daily Wail

Every case is different I guess people get turned down for all sorts but we got ours and I was worried we wouldn't for certain reasons

"his visitor visa refused over what his lawyer said was a minor issue."

The department does not have the resources to handle "minor issues", we all know you get it right or you get it wrong. I personally would have no issue with greater scrutiny of countries that provide the most "overstayers".
