Satellite images show North Korea is 'dismantling facilities at ballistic missile site'

The move is said to be the regime's first step in fulfilling a pledge made to the US at the Trump-Kim summit in Singapore.

Satellite images prove North Korea has started dismantling key facilities at a site used to develop engines for ballistic missiles, according to a Washington-based think tank.

The move is said to be the dictatorship's first step towards fulfilling a pledge made to the US President Donald Trump in June.

The satellite images from 20 July showed work had been carried out at the Sohae Satellite Launching Station to dismantle a building used to assemble space-launch vehicles.

Not really, I think NK is playing everyone.

How can the world be safer when Trump wants an arms race and wants teachers to carry guns?

    Belongs in Politics section IMO..
This is about a world news story...Hopefully if we only talk about the amazing new possibilities of de escalation of nuclear proliferation, the thread will not need to be moved.

If Trump can pull this off and oversee the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula under his watch, and (in the loosest sense of the term) a "normalisation" of relations between the two Koreas (like Ethiopia and Eritrea), then like it or not, he'll probably be in line for a Nobel prize.

Whether this will actually happen is a big unknown. How much of it is due to Trump or just an accumulative effect over the years, I couldn't say. But I do think that the North is ready to play ball. These dictatorships don't last forever. What would be the chances that Kim Jong Lard Arse would rule for the next 30 years without being killed by the Chinese, South Korean agents or his own people? I think he realises this. Much less chance he would have a natural lifespan like his father and grandpop.

I hope so. The only solution will be reunification in the long run.

In the event of reunification, Jelly Belly will want senior positions for himself and cronies. I can't see that being acceptable to the South. There are no other Northerners unattached to the regime who would be qualified to have a role in a unified government.

Jelly Belly will have to die in some shape or form for reunification. Depending on the nature of his death, that could bring about chaos. If his own people overthrow him, that would be the best scenario.

I think a separate North and South is the only viable solution for the foreseeable future - even if the 2 countries became best friends.

Quite possibly. However it comes about, it is the only way it can end reasonably peacefully. I am think I am right in saying tat NK would fall aaprt if it lost the support of South Korea's food and energy aid

    I'm not sure.

I think the North would like to become a mini China. Huge economic growth in the cities under state supervision, and the Party retaining an iron fist over the country as a whole. Vietnam has managed it to a certain extent. The North has reached a stage where sanctions have left little option play nicely with the outside world.

I think this sort of situation where North Korea is no longer a military threat and more open would be acceptable to the South and Japan. China would be happy if the North stayed a regional ally. Even better if it was a puppet again. USA would have to be happy with that outcome as well. There would be no shortage of development money pouring in to the country to develop its cities and infrastructure.

The dilemma for the North is allowing the economic growth and openness without endangering the Party.

Ideologically, the dream of reunification does not weigh heavily on the minds of younger South Koreans. They've known little else and prospered amazingly in the South. Having a North and South where they can travel relatively freely and share culture would be more than acceptable to them.
