I had a long conversation with my wife on this a few months ago.
My wife was a widow when I met her and had been from when her husband died in 2004 at the age of 36 (my wife was 35) anyway her husband was placed in a public cemetery with my wifes side of the family agreeing to pay half the costs and her husbands side the other half. (wifes family paid their half)
My wife then moved to Hong Kong to nanny for her brother, it transpired that her husband side of the family did not pay their half of the funeral costs and my wife was contacted to go in and see the funeral people. This was 2010
Aware of the non payment my wifes family decided they were going to move him from public to a private cemetery, and advised the funeral people of this, a few days later she was contacted and asked to go in and see the funeral people were she was presented with a large bag to take away.
She buried the bag (containing her husband) in the private cemetery a few days later
