It seems to be getting there but it depends which box this is ticking, the vegetarian one or the ecological one. If its the latter then it might be worth trying and developing. Reduce beef farming to the high quality aged cattle rather than beef grown ASAP in order to make killing weight.

In vitro growth of tissue is a science fiction idea from the 1940s and 1950s that has come of age, using it for production or protein for food is secondary to the real reason this technology has been pursued which is the desire to grow in vitro complete replacement organs, they will succeed in this goal as it is all just advanced chemistry and decoding what DNA gene sequences actually do.

When it comes to food though if somehow the world replaced all meat production with this technology we would have become very dependent on something that might not be sustainable, effectively what you are doing with this is eating an eternal animal this cell line will never die it will reproduce forever but it will also accumulate errors and mutate.

Putting all your eggs in one basket is never a great idea.

Burns treatment has seen an impressive benefit from invitro skin growth. Many of the people I talk with in support groups have been able avoid painful grafting using this method. Also people with burns areas larger than grafting areas. It would worry me the mutation side though, we do not want another BSE crisis.

It would take thousands of generations not something we need to worry about but it is a long term issue, perhaps we will one day be able to construct completely a genome of a complex life form from simple atoms indeed it has already been done in terms of constructing an artificial cell that could reproduce from scratch back in 2010.

If we could have that level of control over molecular biology then mutation would not be an issue we would already be at the point where we could engineer ourselves to be immortal never mind anything else.

Once the Chinese get hold of that scientific recipe things will become far more interesting in our new global modern economy! Not.

Not to Vegetarians and Vegans :like:

    The UK vegan population

The UK vegan population is growing. From 2006 to 2018, the number of vegans in the UK increased by more than 360 percent. This year, food giant JustEat listed veganism as its top consumer trend for 2018, after the demand for vegan and vegetarian food ordered through its platform increased by 987 percent.

Large brands like Nestle, McDonald's, Starbucks, Pret A Manger, Pizza Hut and Pizza Express have all increased their vegan offerings in the UK to meet the demand for food that's free from animal produce.
