Does anyone have one of these? If so what does it do that a modern mobile phone cannot? My wife thinks she wants one of these.

Looks interesting but what are they?

I guessed you might have a GoPro. I am wondering if it is overkill for Mrs Ash. She won’t be climbing the Himalayas in a hurry. Says she wants one for touring and holidays though. Any thoughts?

The history of GoPro is interesting, started by a surfer who wanted a waterproof action type camera and had one manufactured in china to suit his specific needs,BUT you can get a decent one without all of the bells and whistles or remote or voice control for around £30,get a generic selfie-stick and glove etc on e-bay at far less than the original GoPro accessories :) I am in the pyrenees next month for a while, maybe a few months, might get a drone to take over, got a Mavic pro but was thinking of the GoPro karma.

My wife has a Dji Osmo, made by the same chancers who do the Mavic drones. It does almost the same as a GoPro (I think) but is more reasonably priced. I didn't pay the current price on Amazon, so can be found cheaper if you shop around.

She uses it for her YouTube channel although the gimbal takes some getting used to. I don't see why technology doesn't have idiot settings so that people who just want to do ordinary things can just take it out of the box and use it.

In all honesty, I don't notice the huge difference between the Osmo and her Google Pixel mobile. I don't tell her this. I just tell her that her uploads are fricking amazing. If she did more videos from outside, in "action" settings etc, maybe the difference would be more noticeable? The wife is eager to use it at a Alton Towers where it may come into its own.

She has also used a cheapo £40 Apeman camera from Amazon which had good reviews. Don't even go there. It's a load of bobbins. Give me £20 and I'll post it to you! Pay for a decent camera or just stick with the mobile phone.

I'm not familiar with the GoPro series John, not the kind of camera I would be into but it appears to have a lot of dedicated accessories for many different kinds of sports activities where the user of the camera is filming from a personal first person perspective, I think these are primarily used for movie footage rather than stills, they generally are wide to ultra wide angle so as to get as much into the scene as possible at the expense of close up detail (even with 4k recording).

The tough aspect is the idea that you can use them anywhere including underwater although I doubt it would survive any significant depth diving, shallow diving a few metres probably ok anything more will need specialised housings.

There are other cameras like the Olympus TG-6 which are waterproof to a depth of 15 metres, include video, have a conventional point and shoot user interface include physical zoom and image stabilisation, indeed I hanker after one of their older models as I have several times over the years invested in expensive underwater housings for my canon point and shoot cameras and none of them have really lasted, the Olympus TG range are just simply waterproof to start with :)

I took this shot below 14 years ago on a Canon Ixus 50 with an underwater housing, camera is long gone and the housings were fiddly to work with which is why I fancy the TG-6 or earlier dedicated waterproof cameras, not being a video guy I don't care so much from that point of view and the GoPro's are strong on that side of the equation I believe.

LOL she cannot swim. So won’t be taking one under water. However beach and swimming pool videos are likely.

She seems to be talking of £300 for one so am wondering if that might be overkill. I have a sneaky suspicion she might be thinking of YouTube videos and also the wider angle perspective - not sure.

I see so she doesn’t need to be paying £300 quid for one?

My wife, since she saw one of her friends using her husband's Go-pro on a recent Liverpool trip, has been harping on incessantly about having one.
She has this obsession on posting stuff on utchub and making oodles of spandoulis.........
I tried to explain the lay of the land, and also make her understand that she hasn't mastered her supadupa Canon SLR Digital camera at all, but sits languishing in the depths of her wardrobe, and only comes out for seldom trips to Italy and what not... Her mobile phone, has a fantastic camera, with all sorts of effects, but the problem she keeps messing with the settings...

300 quid for a very little camera, and just for what I know it is a momentary fad, is far too much.

I did a 2 day GoPro course in Jessops store in Oxford Street, learnt a lot,got a couple of books on GoPro's and how to use them for best result, but to be honest for average use the £30 generic with accessories will save you a fortune and give the same results.

And I think the idea has already been done.

To be fair, Mrs Ash doesn’t spend a lot on herself. She sends money home to her mother each month. So it is difficult to intervene, but yes, I do want to ensure she doesn’t fritter it away.
