Del Pilar was pretty empty when I first went there so I guess my comadre the late Alfredo Lim must have closed it down in his first term, during his second term he closed down Roxas Boulavard there was a clear finanical motivation to get all that moved to the new Mall of Asia promenade site in Pasay.

I did visit the Hobbit House when it was in Del Pilar near Malate Church but by 2008 it had moved to its later location, on their facebook page there are some pictures of James Patrick Turner and the date of his passing, they seem to have conflated an Irish theme into Tolkien's work going by some of the pictures, I do remember the original Hobbit House location was really run down you could smell the mould, it was quite a large high ceiling room but it had good live folk music and I enjoyed being there.

Also just looked up Lim he passed away in 2020 aged 90, a causulty of Covid.

I'd like to visit Thailand sometime, never been there, I'd like to take my kids there for a holiday a beach type holiday in a nice hotel, the visa free aspect is a big plus.

We have looked at a few places the driver in the first instance were countries visa free for Philippine nationals.
Then our travel time windows, with best weather months and Thailand came tops!
Fag packet cost exercise suggests the 5 of us can have 2 weeks in a beachside decent villa in Phuket for about £5k.
Decent flight direct from Philippines for about £200 per head.
    From UK about £800
    Villa £1000
Approx and based on current prices with at this stage minimal cost research

I know people on here have to pledge their allegiance to the Philippines because of their wives, but my lady is Canadian so.......... Your going to find Thailand knocks spots off the Philippines in terms of food, service, cleanliness etc, my woman despite being of pinoy ancestry prefers Thailand, likewise my son, theres a reason Thailand gets 40 million tourists in a year and the Philippines gets one million (a figure which includes a lot of returning Pinoys).

I'm still a couple of years away from dropping even 4k on anything but it sounds do-able.

I don't think anyone on here pledges allegiance to the Phlippines, my connection is only through my kids I fell out with their mother a long time ago, for me at least I can be perfectly objective about the Philippines, it's not great but it could be a place to live for me in the future but in that role it would be a base to explore from and a holiday to Thailand would be a good option if I was basing that on all of us travelling from the Philippines as an origin, I'd like to see Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia and Japan as well as Hong Kong and even mainland China as my niece is there.

Not pledge alliegence per-se but you know what I mean, as I always say there's a reason there are so many Thai restaurants in the UK and so few pinoy ones despite the Pinoys outnumbering thais here 4-1.

While I love Chinese and Indian cuisine I'm not a great fan of Thai, it's ok but it is not to my mind great maybe I need to experience it on the ground in the country.

You are right about the scarcity of Filipino restaurants.

If I was doing this I would fly to Manila on a one month return ticket then book 3 returns for me and the kids to Thailand, I think I would rather do a hotel though rather than a villa, I rented a villa in the Philippines once and the experience was not great although I expect one in Thailand would be a lot better.

I would prefer a hotel so my wife doesn’t have to any work, but a villa we feel is more suitable having a young child with us!

Yeah it's the cooking and cleaning and catering for yourself that's the problem with a villa :(

The villa we had in Thailand included a cleaning service.

My sister is in Spain at the moment, she is back on Sunday, let me ask her where she stayed as she had a really good holiday 2 years ago in phuket province, her ex husband is Thai and her Thai is quite good. I have actually just recommended krabi to a friend who is going at Christmas.
I am having coffee with my sis on Sunday, I will get back to you.

Yes mate, she stayed at a place called malissa villa suites, said she recommends it, really enjoyed her stay, about a hundred quid a night or just over.
