I left a forum a few years back, I think we know which one. Great you have been once, several years ago, you have seen some expat's unshaven, drinking beer, amazing.... God forbid. Americans too. Making remarks about young ladies. Reminds me of other places, Like UK.

For the spelling mistakes, who gives a hoot, just describing the forums you visit for info, oh look another spelling mistake:rolleyes:

    Grow up, please. :)

I certainly won't be retiring to the Philippines, our National Health Service is too valuable to me.

Hmmm in the early stages of my relationship with my wife I really envisaged retiring in PI. I quite looked forward to an idyllic life in sunnier climes. Since I've been on this forum my outlook has completely changed, which I'm rather sad about but I think the reasoning is correct, it's just not realistic for me to venture there when I'm in my 60's or whatever, I mean we are probably more vulnerable in our later years than at any time and for various reasons. I may look at it in the future, we'll see

I do think you are correct. And as you get older you (and I) will be more vulnerable.

It is true isn't it. It's all very well thinking, well if something happens, i'll just jump on a plane back to the UK, unfortunately it don't always work out so convenient, I mean were health is concerned. The only way to half compensate is to have a shed load of money, of which I don't have

Easily said. If you are that ill they wont let you on anyway.

And if they did let you on, then what a journey!

Yep very true, I was thinking something that was progressive rather than a full-hit illness, again I'm looking through rose tinted glasses me thinks or best case scenario. I guess you have to be honest with yourself before embarking on such an exploit. Though on the other hand there are people who just say, screw it, I'm off... I'm not one of them though :)

That all depends on whether you wish to live forever at all costs, which is what the NHS attempts to give you, the maximum extent possible, some are more content with whatever hand fate deals.

Me all I know is I see nothing that appeals to me about spending my final years in England or Scotland for that matter.

So does that mean that PI is the alternative for you?

Yes but only if the economics are right in 9 years time which sadly I suspect they won't be.

I like the place for all its faults.

I was signing up to the dream that you posted John, not the possible reality, I knew and know nothing of the place, same with a lot of other provincial cities, but I do know Manila well, warts and all :)

Understood. The economics have to be right or it's going to be a short retirement over there. I don't disagree, I like the place too but others on here are making me "smell the coffee". I love the idea of retirement there but I dunno, it's just not working right now. PI might have a stronger economy than us by the time I retire :D

Yes that's the problem relative economics, also as their economy evolves and strengthens we westerners will probably be less welcome.

MMmm not so sure about being less welcomed, what's your reason for the thinking. Mine is that they'd be more welcoming, more open to economic growth by being a more open society, accepting all mechansims of growth, even retirees

The best way to find a good place to live is to avoid taking surveys like this American one too seriously. Travel and find your own perfect place, then don't tell anybody else about it.

Hint: If you end up wearing a string vest and drinking beer at breakfast time, you got it sadly wrong!

I dread to think that there may a large number of senile American retirees currently booking airline tickets, and planning to leave the US of A for the first time ever, and head over to these supposed "retirement havens".
