The Phils is actually a very conservative society, they are very nice on a one to one basis and on a small scale family basis, but behind closed doors they are not really keen on foreigners.

Currently they don't have a huge foreign population (western foreign population) and as such we are a novelty and one that brings much needed cash to the country, however they don't like Koreans, they're not that keen on the Japs or the Indians and they have a sizeable population of Koreans (the Korean's don't do themselves any favours, they are often arrogant).

Look at the UK, add enough foreigners and next thing you know you have the fruitcakes like UKIP and we've had a couple of generations to adapt already, the Phils is much less multicultural than the UK and if their economy improves they may feel more ready to express the insular side of their nature.

Of course I could be completely wrong this is just speculation.

Speculative on all sides of course but the input is appreciated. Yep I get the novelty of foreigners but I didn't realise that the country as a whole aren't keen on foreigners/westerners, as you say on a face to face level they are very welcoming, interesting. I can't comment on the likes of UKIP, I don't do politics, no interest, for me they are all a waste of space

Yeah I don't really do politics either.

The majority of Filipinos are a lovely welcoming people but I have seen attitudes of those in the 'Establishment' who are only too happy to put an errant foreigner in their place. I once spoke out of turn to a lady in COMELEC and was promptly told very firmly to stop talking as Philippine electoral issues had nothing to do with me, I had only been trying to be helpful, but I learned that I should never tread on the sensitivities of anything to do with Philippine politics.

I've seen similar things in other parts of Filipino society, I know all this and understand my place in Filipino society if I ever move there, I know I am actually at the bottom of the pile socially but close to the top when it comes to expectations to contribute, I understand all that and my choice to one day move there would be made in full understanding of all the possible negatives including these status issues but I would accept that because I like all the people that I spend time with over there and most that I meet outside that immediate group.

I think that's the correct attitude to adopt, know your place within the social ladder. That applies for anywhere not just PI. Life / retirement will be a lot less stressful that way. You read about it all to often, johnny foreigner still with the same attitude as he has back in blighty, putting his foot in it and paying the consequences. I guess it's a case of keep a low profile but don't be a fool either.

It is alright, there's just a few Expat's that give it a bad name. I have been going there for over twelve years, wife is from Bohol, but she prefers Dumaguete. The City is very small, which I prefer, Pier and airport nearby, plenty of beach resorts south of Dumaguete.
Then there's the Boulvard, where you can walk along after a lovely meal from one of the many restaurants. Nice friendly people, not like the yobs from Cebu or Manila
