Providing you have a call package that includes free calls to UK 0870 numbers, you can now call Philippines mobiles for free.

Most of the big land-line providers: BT, EE, the Post Office, Plusnet, Sky, SSE and Virgin Media offer inclusive call packages that include free calls to 0870 numbers.

Unfortunately, Talktalk no longer includes free calls to 0870 numbers.

If your free calls package includes calls to 0870 numbers, create an account at: uk03.co.uk.

On many UK and international destinations you will actually earn cashback which you can have credited to your PayPal account or in Amazon vouchers. But cashback is not offered on calls to the Philippines.

You can use this service to earn cashback of 4.4p/min on calls to UK land-lines and 3.9p/min on calls to UK mobiles!

Yes, but you have to create an account first and add your BT phone number to the UK03 account. That is how they can pay you cashback on qualifying calls.

Remember that BT impose a limit on each call of 60 minutes. So she will have to hang up and dial again.

Thank you so a timer rigged to my electric fence should do the trick.

Have you used it and been able to check your phone bill to make sure calls were free, Howerd?

Unfortunately, I am with TalkTalk so I cannot make use of this offer as my call package does not include 0870 calls.

If you want to check that it works for you, make a test call and then check your account a day or two later.

When TalkTalk did include free calls to 0845/0870 numbers, I can confirm that I could use dial-thru on both 0870 and 0845 numbers; in fact, I used to use dial-thru about 100 times per day when I worked from home as a market researcher.

If you spend a lot of money phoning the Philippines Howerd, it must be tempting to switch landline provider.

I rarely phone The Philippines. My wife lives in a shared house with free WiFi so we chat on Skype or Google Hangouts. But she does complain that I don't phone her when the WiFi is not working.

I have already told my wife that I will switch land-line provider when she comes here, so that she can call her mum and dad. She wants to get her mum and dad a land-line phone as mobile calls are not too good in their area.

I may now have found a working solution for those who want to call free to Philippine mobiles from a TalkTalk land-line! The solution is more convoluted and makes use of a charging anomaly that may soon be corrected.

For anyone not able to take advantage of this, if you call 0871 881 7777, then after the operator re-directs you... dial 0063 followed by the mobile number in the Phils (minus the 0 prefix ) . This currently costs 10p per minute. I've been using the service for 2 or 3 years now.

10p/minute is the service charge but you have to add the access charge which, from land-lines) varies between 5p/min (TalkTalk) to 11p/min (EE) BT's access charge is 9.58p/min. And, of course, these charges are all payable even if the person you are calling does not answer their phone.

Well I can only check with the last call on my itemised bill (I use Post Office for house phone and broadband) . It shows as 'Specialised Services' ...5 min 27 secs...cost = 88p, plus VAT. Not too bad if it's urgent I suppose.

The Post Office access charge is 9.5p/min, so that call is costing you 19.5p/min, rather than 10p/min.

That would have to be a separate itemised charge, at 5 min 27 seconds he was definitely charged less than 20p a minute.

Graham was that the listing before VAT?

Just done the numbers and Howerd is probably right

    327 seconds is

    0.27 pence a second

one minute of that is 16.2 pence

add 20% VAT at 3.25 pence

    and you get

    19.44 pence a minute mate.

Since 1 July 2015, calls to 084x, 087x and 118x numbers have split charging but it is probably shown as a total figure on the bill. It was Ofcom's wonderful idea to split the cost into service charge and the access charge. The phone companies have used it as an excuse to hike prices but, surprisingly, most still included 0845 and 0870 numbers in free call packages.

This is the only reason why it is now possible to call Philippines mobiles for free!

Yes, I'm not saying it's the cheapest way of calling, but convenient for some. ....and yes, as I have stated , that bill does not include VAT.
£1 for over 5 minutes to the Phils is not exactly breaking the bank.
25 years ago it would cost £1 per minute.
