This thread has drifted a lot from Mark's opening post, but clearly has a great deal of useful content, it might be an idea to start a proper new thread in the politics section?

    What do you guys think?

Nominations have not even started. But, because this is a U.S.-type Presidential race, people will trail their coats early to assess their likely level of support, both amongst the population at large and much more importantly amongst the businessmen who may finance them.

There is no real party system so a candidate must finance herself or himself. To run for Congress costs around 30 million pesos; say £500,000.00. To run for the Senate costs perhaps thirty times that - and for the Presidency - multiply again!

    It looks like at least:

    Jejomar Binay

    Mar Roxas

    Roderigo Duterte

    Grace Poe

    Miriam Santiago

    And maybe three more.

Seeing as a few of you agree, I will look into splitting all this politics stuff off into a new thread, not done that before so it won't happen until later tonight or tomorrow once I work out how to do it :)

Up to a point, with deliberate intent most governments could work out who each individual on here is without a great deal of effort, both through internet records and the information we give away about ourselves on here.

Facebook for example has some of the most scary pattern matching algorithms in existence, they process so much data from so many sources that they identify associations between people that you would not believe possible.

    latest update:-

A pensioner who returned from the Philippines to face justice in Britain has appeared in court charged with a string of sex offences involving boys.

Douglas Slade, 74, flew into Heathrow Airport from the Philippines late on Wednesday evening and was immediately arrested.

He was seen exiting the arrivals hall at Terminal 4 in a wheelchair, flanked by six officials who escorted him to a waiting police van.

Slade was arrested at his home in Angeles City on 3rd June by officers of the Bureau of Immigration who were acting on a formal request by the British Embassy. He was paraded before the press the following day:-

He was held at the Bureau's Bicutan detention facility until he was deported as an undesirable alien last Wednesday.

UK government should have refused to have him back, let him while away his days in a prison there. He could've then used his house proceeds to pay for his needs then.

Hopefully he'll find it somewhat unpleasant wherever he ends up.
But I understand your sentiment and agree in principle.
I just worry about how easily he might have managed to become a VIP guest :erm:

It was Avon and Somerset Constabulary who wanted him back to answer charges relating to sex offences he committed in Bristol.
