Let's say that my girlfriend sister owns to a bank in Philippines 100K pesos. Is it possible to be jailed if she can't pay that amount ? She has a regular work as a teacher, so I think what can happen is that they will halfen her salary but no jail ... Right ?
Lovely breezy morning ideal for letting some red flags take some fresh air.. Do not, under any circumstances, give any money to anyone. If you rich selfish foreigner feel as if you are being given the guilt trip.... Run.... .
Agree with above if this is a ploy to get money from you, then run the other way. Not your problem. In any case I don't believe she can be jailed for merely having debt.
Oh I'm very careful when is about that ... But I'm afraid that she's being manipulated by her family ,they did it before when she was working away from home. Instead of paying the debt they kept spending her money ...
that is standard practice in the Philippines. Do not send money no matter what the excuse. We get tens of excuses and requests for money every month. Ignore it all.
Bear in mind this sort of excuse is just a test to see if you're the kind of idiot that's gonna pay. If you give money then that's just the start of it. Then they will hit you for the big cheese. True story - I saw a relative of my wife complain that the house my wife built for her parents didn't even cost a million peso...
If she has regular work with regular income as a teacher then I'm sure she can arrange to pay the money back in instalments, no brainer really, it happens all the time.
Hello Andrea Fidati As a Filipina ,this kind of drama is no extra ordinary ,my advice is ... Don't give them any chance to treat you as walking ATM, you will regret if you let them so be careful ... You want to be treated as human with respect .
Hi @Andrea Fidati! If your gf's sister issued post dated cheques to pay her debt and those bounced they yes she can be jailed for estafa. But if no cheques are involved then no. I don't think we have a comprehensive law re: debts. Hope this helps!
