    About bloody time too.

The whole place is a disgrace.... as is the fact the most of the illegals, so-called asylum-seekers, so-called refugees etc have been permitted to cross several European countries to reach it. And the EU residents wonder why people here voted for Brexit.

I'm not so sure they will stop migrants from making their way to Calais, its been like a magnet now for years.

As Graham states, probably a lot of people in the UK voted for Brexit just on the strength of seeing the mess at Calais on TV, when you see the inhabitants of the camp being interviewed on TV you automatically think I hope they don't make it to the UK, or a lot of us do :)

The very fact they are willing to break the law to gain entry to the UK makes them unworthy of coming to the UK.

Why would you vote Brexit on the basis of that camp, when it's very existence proves that they can't legally get to the UK even though we are part of the EU?

So leaving the EU makes no difference on that.

But it does, Graham. The camp is a symbolic manifestation of the failure of the EU to enforce its own laws - in this case the Dublin Regulation whereby refugees must apply to the first safe country they reach for asylum. But these countries all know that these so-called refugees want to come to "the land of milk and honey", the UK, so simply wave them on their way.

Hollande's plan will achieve nothing other than make life more uncomfortable for Calais residents as the migrants will continue to amass there.

But you can not make people stay in the first country they set foot in, laws or no laws, borders or no borders, its impossible to stop determined people crossing Europe, I doubt anyone waves them on.

In Italy we wave them on......... Or at least we try.
But the Austrians, the Swiss and the french have now shut the borders... Thus creating ghettoes near the crossing points.
In the meantime, more and more are "rescued" and fetched ashore in Sicily or other Southern Italy ports.
Egypt has now started as new-ish set off point. During this past week, a boat with 600 onboard sank....... Hundreds drowned.
Until something drastic is done, like forced repatrian to the starting port, nothing will change.
By all means, rescue them. But take them straight back.

Then they are not refugees but economic migrants and should be returned to their setting-off point.

In my opinion forced repatriation should be a option but there are too many do gooders in the EU for this to be a viable option. If the refugees/economic migrants knew they risked being sent back then they might think twice before putting their families through a dangerous boat journey.

Do it twice or three times on the trot, and they may seriously think if it is viable to risk all that money or life for a return trip .. Chances are only a few real desperates will undertake the risk......

As was the case only a few years back, only a few dared to take to the waters.

The problem with repatriation is the news footage of crying babies, families being herded onto aeroplanes in EU countries will play straight into the hands of the left wing softies.

To get on top of the problem something has to be done that a lot of people may not like, tough decisions have to be made for a tough problem, it cannot go on.

A few years back, when a much maligned Italian Premier Berlusconi, was in charge, he had a golden deal with Colonel Ghaddafi, to return immediately any migrants setting off from Lybia.
It worked fine and dandy, until Sarkozy, Camoron and Obama decided that the Colonel had to go.......

    Arab spring my butt.......

They are probably invited to have a look around their potential 'luxury' accommodation in jail ... or given the option to f off back to where they came from... after having been relieved of their spare pesos. :)

i must be naive---but how do illegal immigrants think they will survive in the UK? no public funds--no legal work. and if they end up in a detention camp pending an asylum application--then what ?
still--i suppose being homeless here and begging on the streets is still preferable to the miserable dump of a country they come from.

Thats just it though isnt it there are the unscrupulous company owners who will employ them for a pittance and then put them up in some slum household 5 to a room etc and reap the rewards with fat cat cigars big houses and flash cars. These employers once caught should have all assets seized in their or family members name, and then jailed.
