Book flights direct with airline or via broker?

Well, I got a reply from Emirates and it's a no-no. They say it's not possible to use tickets 'out of sequence', and after asking for clarification (told them that tickets would not be used 'out of sequence', it was just that one wouldn't be used) they said that utilizing one flight was still not allowed.

After doing a search online it appears that airlines are on the lookout for the exact scenario I wanted to use. It's called 'Throwaway Ticketing' and if the airline spots it you might have to pay the full fare at the airport or not be allowed to board.

I'd imagine the vast majority will get away with it unnoticed, but a western guy with a Filipina partner will probably be scrutinized so not worth the risk:

I'll include the response I got from Emirates here:

    Hi Chris,

Can you please confirm that you’re planning to book the below itinerary for your wife?

    · Manchester to Dubai to Manila (1st set of flights, outbound) · Manila to Dubai to Manchester (2nd set of flights, inbound)

Do you mean to say that she won’t use her outbound flights or 1st set of flights (Manchester to Dubai to Manila)? She only plans to use her inbound flight or 2nd set of flights (Manila to Dubai to Manchester).

If so, this is still out of sequence use (flying only on the return part of the ticket).

You may only use your flights in your ticket how it’s booked. You can’t skip any scheduled flight at all.

    Hope this clarifies.

Best regards, Johan, Emirates Social Media Team

As they say, you need to use the tickets "in sequence", if you miss a flight then subsequent flights will be automatically cancelled.

However if you can get MNL-DBX-MAN returning MAN-DBX-MNL for less than a one way ticket MNL-DBX-MAN then go for it, it is against the rules and the small print will most likely state that a penalty might be imposed but that would be most unlikely. The only thing you will lose are the airmiles.

This might explain why this gentleman was flying on a plane with a seat booked for his "doll".

On the return leg he might have been flying back with his wife, the doll would have travelled as check in baggage.

You could always try taking an inflatable lady with you for the outward UK to Philippines leg, I don't think it would work though.
