Nick Clegg should take his own advice - except he won't, of course!

"Open Britain" is the re-branded "Britain Stronger In Europe" group and encompasses all those who, like its leaders Nick Clegg, Ed Milliband, Anna Soubry and Nicky Morgan, can't and/or won't accept the result of the Referendum on EU membership. They fully intend to frustrate the Government's resolve to carry-out the wishes of the majority.

How very undemocratic they are and as the majority of voters of all four of those MPs' constituencies elected to leave the EU, they may find themselves removed from the Westminster gravy-train in 2020 at the latest. So Nick Clegg, in your own words, "you're answerable to voters" and that means all voters, not just those who voted the same way as you. Yet you actively seek to frustrate the democratic decision of the majority of voters in your Sheffield Hallam constituency and in the country as a whole.

Yes, Mr Clegg: contrary to what you, your successor and your fellow deniers claim, the electorate did know what they were voting for on 23 June. They voted to regain Parliamentary Sovereignty so that our laws are only made by our Parliament, sitting in Westminster, and can not be changed by a court of appointees sitting elsewhere in Europe. And they voted to regain control of our nation's borders. As has been made very, very clear before the Referendum by the likes of Cameron, Clegg, Gove and Johnson as well as Juncker, Tusk and other Eurocrats: "out" means exactly that, out - out of the Single Market and out of the European Union. It couldn't have been clearer to the electorate. Yet Clegg and the other Remoaners in Open Britain would have us believe otherwise.

Open Britain seeks to frustrate our leaving the EU by insisting that our bargaining position be laid before Parliament, debated and voted upon. It is no secret that they intend to try to delay the start of our negotiations with the EU for as long as possible, years, decades even. Well, until the next General Election at least but that's a very dangerous game for them to play, one that will very likely backfire with disastrous consequences - for them.

As for putting-up a candidate in Theresa May's Maidenhead constituency, the Lib Dems have done that many times in the past. In 2015, the party's candidate came third with 5,337 votes, or 9.9%, to his name. That's over 30,000 votes fewer than went to Mrs May who was returned by 65.83% of the electorate with a turnout of 72.84%. What planet does Clegg think he's on? With her 29,059 majority, Theresa May has the fourth safest seat in Parliament!

I find it really frustrating and very annoying when the Remoaners say that people on the Brexit side didn't realise what they were voting for, its bloody obvious to every man and his dog that we voted to take back control of our borders knowing full well that it would probably be the end of the UK being in the single market.

EU, give em an inch and they take a mile.

Having worked in Luxembourg for "many years", I became increasingly aware over the past two decades ago that the EU philosophy was very anti British.

I have no respect for Cleggie, only in it for himself.

If the remainers are to be believed, there are at least seventeen and a half million racists living in Britain. In fact, surveys conducted after the Referendum clearly show that the top reason - by far - for people voting to leave the EU was so that Britain would regain its national sovereignty, with Parliament framing and making the law and for it not to be subservient to unelected mandarins in Brussels or the ECJ. It was, in other words, a vote for democracy.

Strange that the Liberal Democrat Party's idea of democracy is rule by unelected officials and that the losers in a plebiscite get to call the shots (but only if they are the losers!). Here's a tip for Messrs Clegg and Farron: dictatorship even if it's relatively benign is not a synonym for democracy ;)

    Deluded or what ...:

Nick Clegg appeared on The Daily Politics (BBC One) this lunchtime and they played him referendum clips of David Cameron, George Osborne, Boris Johnson, Michael Gove and Andrea Leadsom all saying Brexit meant leaving the Single Market. Still Clegg insisted people didn’t know that’s what they were voting for!

Mark does not live in Britain, does not pay British taxes, benefits from EU rules but presumes to tell the those of us who do live here how we should think and act.

He no longer lives in Davao, having strangely chosen to leave that Earthly Paradise, but presumes to tell us all how wonderful its murdering ex- Mayor is.

The Tory Party, as exemplified by the other doddering old buffers who have chipped in on this thread, is no longer the Nasty Party; May has been so concerned to occupy the ground taken by UKIP that she has turned it into the Stupid and Nasty Party.

As time has passed since the death of Sean Ryan, "his" forum has turned into a citadel of reaction.

I find myself much more at home with my Filipino, British and American friends than with almost anyone here, so I think I shall just give up wasting time and bandwidth.

You have to realise Andrew that very few people on the forum and indeed the UK as a whole share your Liberal views, that was reflected in the last General election results where the Lib Dems lost 48 seats leaving them with just a measly 8 MPs.

Its not that anyone is against you on the forum, its just a case of your views are not shared by many of us, Liberals are a thing of the past I'm sorry to say old boy.

I must give you credit Andrew, you do put up a good argument although you are a voice in the wilderness :)

And do carry on Andrew, you know we love you really :)

Not that it's anyone's business but mine, I am resident in the UK for the purposes of taxation even though I live abroad. And as I recall, you knew full well why we've chosen to leave Davao and indeed were very supportive of our decision. This thread is not about me, my tax affairs or why I moved to Malta after some five years in Davao. Nor is it about the Conservatives. This thread is about the ridiculous antics of a former leader of the Liberal Democrats who is incapable of accepting the result of the Referendum.

The Conservative Party's 2015 General Election Manifesto - upon which the party was re-elected into office - specifically states that a Referendum on Britain's continued membership of the European Union would be held and that the government would honour the result and execute the decision. And that is exactly what the Prime Minister is doing.

Your characterisation of Theresa May is completely - but understandably - wrong. UKIP's job is done and is about to implode. Theresa May has moved the Conservatives leftwards to occupy the centre left formerly held by the Blairite/Brownite version of the Labour Party which Corbyn has kindly vacated.

If the Conservative Party is, as you say, the stupid and nasty party, then how come its popularity is so high - 18 points above Labour? But I don't think you mean stupid and nasty at all, but dangerous to the very existence of leftist politics.

Surely that typifies the whole problem.

Some "head up his ass" foreigner, preaching from his ivory tower about the doom and gloom of Brexit,
and how Britain cannot possibly survive (in his opinion) without being subservient to:
    • Japanese financial institutions,
    • German chamber of Commerce and Industry,
    • US and European investment banks,
    • JP Morgan.

"Stupid and nasty" because it intends to act on the democratic decision of the British electorate and not bow to the demands of a minority who either want the result ignored or for there to be a further plebiscite so that next time the voters will get it "right"? Really? Seriously? That's not democracy: we have a first past the post system which has stood us in good stead for many, many years. I know it is your party's stated position that we employ some form of proportional representation but unfortunately the majority of the population (that bothered to express an opinion) don't agree with that. The result of the 2011 Referendum on implementing an Alternative Voting system was crystal clear: in round figures 68% of voters were against and only 32% agreed with proposal. I agree there was a low turnout (just 42%) but that rather indicates that changing the voting system wasn't particularly high on the electorate's list of priorities.

I didn't say that the Conservatives have moved into Lib Dem territory at all; Theresa May has "parked her tanks on Labour's lawn" following Labour's lurch to a far left position. I do agree that some Ukippers have left that party and rejoined the Conservatives, so might be considered to be on the right wing of that party. But that does not mean that the Conservatives occupy Ukip's ground: they don't.

I'm not sure where the Lib Dems now fit. Having moved somewhat to the left of Labour during the Blair premiership (having previously occupied the centre ground), they tottered rightwards in 2010 when they formed a coalition with the Conservatives. When their time in power was coming to an end, they courted Milliband hoping for a power-sharing deal with a minority Labour government. But the electorate had other ideas and gave the Conservatives an increased majority.

Like many observers, I am amazed that Theresa May is shying away from calling a snap General Election. Her current massive lead in the polls almost guarantees her an overall majority of around 140 seats and I wouldn't mind betting that the SNP would replace Labour as the largest opposition party in the Commons.

You have managed some abuse, but countering his argument is beyond you.

So do tell us all just how and why it is that a nation whose manufacturing exports are only slightly larger than those of the EU member nation one sixth our size mentioned in the article (you have read it, haven't you, Dave?) can expect to rely on manufacturing exports when its balance of trade is the number mentioned in the article?

Or are you just another fat lazy bastard who thinks the world owes him a living, hates foreigners because "they come here and steal our jobs"?

Let's see if you can actually think for yourself.

    I won't hold my breath.

So you keep reminding us. And I will keep reminding you we are a tolerant bunch on here, we don't censor posts to suit our personal agendas, and as you can see, your welcome to say what you like, but don't be in the least bit surprised if it comes back at you. Long may this continue.

Also to remind you once again, I voted LibDem at the last election (Mark Williams is an excellent MP and is very popular here in Ceredigion), so stop branding us all a bunch of Tory 'nasty party' voters. That trophy has been claimed by Labour. I'm hoping come the next election UKIP will just expire, Labour will be insignificant, so now is the time for LibDem to be the real opposition. If the results at Witney are anything to go by, it’s possible.

That is one interpretation, certainly. Another is the Witney electorate showing their disgust for their previous MP's appalling display of cronyism upon leaving Number 10. I wonder whether you have noted that the turnout for the By-Election was just 38,445 down from 58,482 who voted at last year's General Election in that constituency. Many Conservatives did not vote this time. Nevertheless the Lib Dem candidate did well to treble her party's vote, it has to be said.

Indeed many Conservatives did not vote, and considering the Governments slender majority, the Tories will have been trying very hard.

I completely agree. But Andrew should not hold his breath for a Lib Dem capture of Witney: the constituency is so true blue Tory that that will never happen! Liz Leffman owes her increased support to both Labour's and Ukip's drop far more than to any Tories swapping sides - which probably didn't happen (Tories stayed away for reasons I've stated earlier).

I don't think I can agree with that. Maybe it is just a coincidence, but everyone who was voted for Brexit and talk with me about it was thinking that if UK leave the EU and take control of the borders it will make the time of world hegemony of British Empire come back to life.
Some others was saying that it will make all the people from India and Pakistan will be sent back home which is funny. :)
