    Hello all,

    Long time no see. :)
Something just come to my mind recently and it keeps me consider and little bit worrying.
Like you all know and probably see there's lots of fake products selling everywhere. Fake clothes like Adidas, Nike, Puma. Fake watches like Casio, mostly everything because China is very close.

And this is what makes me worry. What about food? Last time I start to care very much about what I eat. I am still young and I don't want to die in a few years because I eat some food with weird chemicals inside. Not long ago I seen a TV programme where British border control was holding and dispose lots of containers with fake food sent here from all different countries. If they try to smuggle fake food here in UK then it's probably lots of easier to do it in Philippines. As well here we have strict EU rules about producing food. I am almost sure Philippines are not even in half strict like that. You can go to the shop or on the market and buy a fresh fruit and you are happy because it looks nice and taste good, but you can't be sure what was done with this fruit before you have it. What pesticides was farmer using, what chemicals make this fruit to grow, what chemicals are still left in this fruit and what chemicals you will be eating. The only way you will find it it'll be in a few years when you receive a message from your doctor that you have a cancer or diabetes.

This is really make me worry, because I plan to move and live in Philippines soon, but right now it'll make me suspicious every time I will be doing grocery shopping.

Did you ever think about it? Or is it just me being crazy? :p

The Philippines exports its agricultural products around the world, including the United States, Japan, Europe, and ASEAN countries (members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations). Major export products are coconut oil and other coconut products, fruits and vegetables, bananas, and prawns (a type of shrimp). Other exports include the Cavendish banana, Cayenne pineapple, tuna, seaweed, and carrageenan. The value of coconut-product exports amounted to US$989 million in 1995 but declined to US$569 million by 2000. Imported agricultural products include unmilled wheat and meslin, oilcake and other soybean residues, malt and malt flour, urea, flour, meals and pellets of fish, soybeans and whey.

Because we are in the Province most of the veg we buy is grown locally if not from places like our garden or Bohol bee farm..
The world has changed and farmers all around the world are using GMO engineered seeds and other hybrid products that have been sprayed again and again with Pesticides..
My neighbour was an Aussie farmer..He has told me stories that are quite frankly shocking.

Here is some data that might surprise you if you think the food you buy in Europe and the west is safe..

Can you please provide a link to your source for this assertion. As far as I am aware, there is no GM rice grown for human consumption in the Philippines.

I can see you don't understand what I mean. There's nothing wrong in GMO. GMO is just a story to wind up people who don't understand what are they talking about. Just a cheap shocking sensation to lure big number of watchers / readers / viewers. As an example I can give you the carrot. Oryginalny carrot was violet, almost black, but over a 400 years ago Dutch people produce orange looking carrot because orange is a Dutch national colour. I guess all people shocked about GMO don't know that GMO is nothing new. It exists from the hundreds of years. But people crave for shocking stories so media just give to people what they want. Just to lure as much people to buy the newspaper / watch TV show as they can. This is the culture of capitalistic countries. Nobody really care about you, everyone just care about money. The sooner you realise it the better for you.

And export of agricultural products is totally different story. Exports are made by massive big farms and you can't even imagine how many tests the fruits have to pass the control and to be qualified for export. I mean accepted by customer who buy it. And one tiny mistake after that and boom. Everything is refused and company lose huge amount of money. But nobody control local market in Philippines. And you have to always remember. Nobody care about you, everyone just care about the money. To sell you something and get the money off you. What will happen after that is not important.

And that's what exactly I mean. Here in Europe I can at least hope that there is someone who control food products. That if I read the label of the ingredients on a food package it is true. I always read a ingredients label of the products that I am buying. I like to know what I eat. But Philippines like a country of fake products make me suspicious if that ingredients wrote on the label are real.
And another thing is if I can see lots of people selling fake Adidas shoes and casio watches everywhere on every street, what about food in their shops? How can I be sure if for example when I buy a hellmanns ketchup in the shop it is real ketchup? Maybe it is a fake product made somewhere in the wooden shed from water, grease, red printer ink and some artificial flavour?

And about your list of countries with cancer it is totally normal thing. People from modern countries don't care what they eat, and because they have money they eat lots of it. They don't care as long as they enjoy. Drugs, alcohol, junk food, not important. Only having fun is important. Motto of today young people is "Live fast, die quick". So no wonder they are on the top of the lists for cancer.

If you are genuinely concerned about fake products and you believe in the possibility that there are food products in the market that may have some undesirable effect on your body I would seriously consider as to whether you should be considering moving out there. I remember some time ago, maybe 7 years, there was a big scandal in China with baby milk. Again this as I recall was poor food control and more concern about profit than safety. That was China of course but I'm sure some of that baby milk would have made its way to the Philippines. If it can happen with baby milk, it can happen with any food product.

I seen them here in UK too, but only in Indian shops. :)

This was the one with big scandal, but probably there was lots of more others, but nobody mention about it or nobody find out.

I still want to move there, but looks like it will be a challenge for me if I will want to buy food. And as far as I want to live in the province I can still grow my own fruits and vegetables. ;)

I would think local markets should be relatively fine. They are local producers and Id think probably relatively "organic". I went with my brother in law last time I was there to pick up lechon baboy. The live pigs were in their piggery and all looked okay to me. Oh and welcome back. As you say its been a while.

Horse meat is more expensive than beef. Same as donkey meat.

Unless you are talking about double dead horse. :p
