This brings back memories, I remember when I was a child going around collecting empty beer/bottles to get the deposit paid on them.

This not so new idea makes a lot of sense and hopefully will change peoples habits regarding bottle disposal.

If nothing else it is going in the right direction, I absolutely hate it when I see discarded rubbish on the street which often includes cans and bottles. They are trying it in Scotland and hopefully it will move to the rest of the country if successful.

It is still being done in ph!

When you buy bottled coke (or sprite) from a local sari sari store, you are required to pay a deposit (or bring your own similar size bottle).

The pop man used to do the rounds delivering fizzy drinks and at the same picking up empties which would be discounted against what you bought.

I just assumed everyone threw it all in the recycling these days.

Oh yes the Pop man, it was Corona who delivered when I was a kid, earlier than that my parents had dandelion and burdock delivered in pot jugs :)

Its a good idea, we all too easily fell into a throw away society.

Ahh it was mainly Barr near us. Think they had a factory not too far away. Vimto too as that was made in Ashton in Makerfield if memory serves.

Vimto is still made there, years back Vimto was only sold in the North of the UK, not sure of the reason for that, I know because my relatives from London could never buy it there.

Barr are still going strong of course, I expect Irn bru is their biggest seller.

I didn't realise Vimto wasn't national years ago.

I was trying to find some reference to it but I'm struggling :)

Yea id think you would struggle to find something like that but I can well believe it. Maybe a relatively small operation at the beginning so can well understand that.

I think, could be wrong, Vimto was just a cordial when it started out, I think the fizzy Vimto came years later, I remember a aunty of mine always giving me hot Vimto.

Yep definitely cordial for a long time before being carbonated. I do enjoy Vimto and buy the cordial every now and then.

    in glasgow--well before my time....

in the cinemas--kids could get in for a penny ( pre decimal )---or a jam jar.

    it was busy saturday matinees.

one posh kid paid with half a crown ( 2 and 6====30 pennies )

he got 29 jam jars in change.

In and around Glasgow when I was small, you would go to a Saturday matinee with one and six (1/6 ) that would get you in and get a choc ice or tub of ice cream at the interval.

I used to collect the bottles and take them all back in one go they were currency :) my tipple was Vimto when I was young, ruined my teeth (pre fluoride generation) :) took up Irn Bru properly when I was older, the new Vimto Zero is actually rather nice, but Tesco now are doing Mango Zero for 55p for a two litre bottle (45p each if you buy two or more) and it is really fantastic.

Will this lead to English Coca-Cola drinkers smuggling their empties across the border into Scotland, so that they can reclaim unpaid deposits?

The one we get that she likes right now is just a still juice. Is that one made from concentrate?
