......amid SNP demand for fresh independence referendum
THE pound has fallen against the euro and dollar amid growing concerns Nicola Sturgeon is set to spark a fresh political crisis by calling a second Scottish independence referendum.

Sterling was down by around 0.6 per cent against the euro to €1.173 and 0.3 per cent against the dollar to $1.242 in early Monday trading.

Theresa May's Government is braced for the Scottish First Minister to demand another vote to leave the United Kingdom, as Article 50 is triggered, according to reports.

The Scottish National Party has claimed Brexit means Scotland should be given another referendum for independence.

Markets are set to react badly to a second vote because of the uncertainty cast over Britain, as it gears up to leave the European Union (EU).

If Mrs Sturgeon gets her way, a fresh Scottish vote would reportedly be held next year - during the peak of Brexit negotiations.

Joshua Mahony, market analyst at IG, said: "The pound has seen substantial selling at the open today, following reports that Theresa May will push for the almost certain Scottish referendum to take place post-Brexit.

"This is all about leverage, with a united Britain representing a stronger hand when it comes to Brexit negotiations.

"At a time when businesses and individuals alike are struggling to prepare for the UK’s exit of the EU, there is a good chance they will also have to deal with the breakup of the UK, should the Scottish choose to leave."

Experts said the pound could also be troubled by the prospect of Mrs May clashing with Brussels over freedom of movement to Britain.

    Hardly Boots :D

World First reported that almost all the losses were recouped later in the day, this is well within normal trading, a real crash is 10% or more the day after BREXIT.

When I made my daily check this morning it was about 62.7 at best, now it is 62.47, oooooooo...... the sky is falling :D

Let's see what happens on the 9th of March and the days after, although I currently think it will not be quite as bad a cliff edge as I have previously thought.

I think the markets have probably priced in the next major event already.

Its hardly surprising. The vast majority of the country voted to stay in the EU. The problem she has is that she not only has still not answered the questions from the last referendum on finance and currency, but that the EU will not allow Scotland to either remain in the EU nor to join quickly afterwards. Spain would not want to set any precedent that would encourage Catalan independance and the EU itself would have issues with the shared border, all those English refugees trying to get into Greece. ;)

Nicola Sturgeon sends the pound plunging by demanding a referrendum? Seriously?

She's demanded a referrendum almost every day since she lost the last one. The pound's has gone down and up and down and up constantly since then, so her going on about a referrendum must have been responsible for it going up as well as going down and also when it stayed the same.

A second Scottish independence referendum is inevitable in the near future, the SNP are blinkered on this issue, a bit like me on Brexit :)

Whether the Scots decide to leave the UK is another matter as all the uncertainties around them leaving are all still unanswered from the first referendum (didn't stop Brexit I know).

Its a decision for the people of Scotland to take and I wish them luck whichever way the vote will go, I would personally like Scotland to stay within the UK and get rid of Sturgeon as I find her very annoying :)

With oil unlikely ever to get above $70 a barrel again the SNP whole economic model needs ...well remodelling.

They said oil would never reach $50 a barrel then they said it would never reach $100 :)

Scotland has a lot going for it but as you say, it needs sorting out.

I work in the oil services industry and no one I know expects it to rise much more again, unless there's a war. The other problem is that demand is dropping in some segments and we currently have a glut.

I suppose oil is like everything else, supply and demand.

Lets hope we don't have to have another war to see the price of oil rise :)

She's a nasty little trouble-maker, hell-bent on destroying something which though not perfect, is far far better than the guaranteed train-wreck (for the Scots) which would result, should she get her way. I feel sorry for the Scottish people. They certainly need us more than we need them.

You are right Jim, I'd vote for Scottish independence just in the hope I would see less of Sturgeon and Salmond on TV :)

I wouldn't, most Scots are not represented by Sturgeon and the SNP. Scottish politics is skewed by a very poor labour party. The union will thrive the more we move to a cooperative federal model like Germany. Devolution in places like the NW is the next stage. The big dividend from the union is security and our borders and I would pay a lot to keep that.

Its a good point about the demise of the Labour party in Scotland, its always better of course to have political balance which Scotland no longer has.

Will soon be the same in the rest of the UK too unless Labour pull their socks up and start becoming a strong opposition again, which of course is unlikely with JC at the helm.
