All I meant was that CAT 5 is rated at 100Mhz and CAT 6A at 500 Mhz both are supposed to be able to handle Gigabit Ethernet but in practice CAT 5 does not really work properly with a Gigabit switch you get lousy transfer rates.

The router that Sky provides is a crap 100Mhz thing so I got myself a small Netgear 8 port switch and chain that to the router, on my own network at least I can move files about quickly which is an issue if you are backing up 700 GB of photos across your network.

I get about 32 Mbit on the Fibre connection I have, pretty poor really and it dropped significantly in the first year as more people in the building got broadband. What's worse is the upload speed is only 4 Mbit which means that backing that lot up to the web takes a month or more.
