You got me wondering now. Up until now it has been a case of “because it does” in my mind. This article highlights your question and offers solutions:

We know how it arrives in the crust but not how it arrived here on Earth, so it seems.

This is what did all the damage to the Creationist theories. Discovered by a Scots chap in 1788, in Scotland. A key component of the big jigsaw. This guy came up with the notion of deep time. And postulated that features such as in the image, were not created by a large biblical flood, much to the dismay of the Creationists.

    What does your photo represent?

To my untrained eye the photo shows sedimentary deposits, quite possibly created by a large flood, part of these are tilted over to the vertical plane.

All of this appears to have been highly eroded by the large flood in the background. :D

Do we have any geologists here?

I would guess that, because the layered rock structures are overlapping each other at different angles, this shows that the creationists' time frame for the Earth would be incorrectly out by millions of years.

:like: The gap between the two is about 70 million years. Plus or minus a few days. (I personally timed it with a watch). Just the gap.

Those creationists should be mindful of the gap, they may trip over

It is known as an unconformity. Aposhark sums it up well. The thing is we can look back now and say that it seems pretty obvious but back in 1788 nobody had considered what James Hutton had discovered, least of all the Creationist protagonists. ( just like other scientific discoveries such as Newton’s “falling apple” and Archimedes eureka “bath” moment).

Extracted from the Edinburgh University website:

“James Hutton was born in Edinburgh in 1726, a time when the prevailing theories about the age of the Earth were more religious than scientific.

Hutton challenged biblical notions that the Earth was only a few thousand years old, instead arguing that for the nature of rock formations to be explained, our planet had to be far more ancient.

His groundbreaking work proposed that the core of our planet is hot, and that this energy drives changes at the surface.

This was in stark contrast to the beliefs of the time, which held that all rocks were deposited by the oceans.”
