Douglas Rain, a Shakespeare actor who provided the eerie, calmly homicidal voice of HAL in Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, has died at the age of 90.

The Canadian actor died Sunday morning, according to the Stratford Festival, where Rain spent 32 seasons acting in such roles such as Othello's Iago and Twelfth Night's Malvolio. He was also a founding member of the company. The Winnipeg-born actor had dozens of theater, film and television credits.

However, Rain's biggest mark on pop culture was less Shakespearean, but perhaps just as much a classic: as 2001'sHAL 9000, a sentient, rogue computer in a film written in collaboration with science-fiction author Arthur C. Clarke and widely regarded as Kubrick's masterpiece. The American Film Institute ranked HAL as the 13th greatest movie villain of all time.

That's a shame and today we lost Stan Lee as well.

Regards HAL, he's been in my current desktop wallpaper for a few months, at least the Discovery and the opening shots that culminate in that famous scene that you've posted Paul.

HAL in some senses was the Discovery, to me the greatest Sci-Fi space craft ever built :) I was just looking at buying the sequel on Amazon video a few minutes ago.

On my X301 ThinkPad HAL's red eye is the whole of my desktop :)

Rain had the perfect voice for HAL.

Yes a very popular soul Stan Lee according to the amount of celebrities praising his talents.

You know I wasn’t even aware of a sequel but just checked it out on Amazon :)

I showed Shey the clip and I said that a computer wouldn’t have responded to his calls but then I thought, well an AI one probably would have :)

I was a huge Marvel fan as a child and I'm a big fan of what they've done with Marvel Studios over the last 10 or 12 years, I hope Stan already recorded his cameo's for the second part of Infinity war and for Captain Marvel next year.

His cameo in Thor Ragnarok last year was hilarious :)
