Hi guys and girls I'm after some advice on getting an action “cameras” . I used to use go pro cameras when I was racing but I found they were overpriced and a pain in the neck. Lucky I used to be able to buy them cheap. They used to overheat really easily and couldn't handle vibrations as well as I would like. I am after a pair of cameras to use with my new project and possibly on my truck but I don't want to spend a lot of money on them as they probably would only get used a couple of times.

So any recommendations on cheap action cams that can cope with a reasonable amount of vibration heat, and come with decent sucker mounts as I would like to get some footage from the boom/spreader of my truck when I'm stacking containers five high. I used to use roll bar mounts on the last car but that restricts where I can put them so having plenty of mount options is a bonus. im not too worried about the picture quality as long as its watchable.

Thanks for the offer mate. does it take video ? ; )

This is some footage from my old camera it does show the vibration but not as bad as it actually is . The video is from an early shakedown session not long after getting the car and we were having issues but I don't have any good footage from a solid run.

I googled ‘what’s the best action camera ‘ the other day . There are quite a large number now , and some half the price of a GoPro . I think you just need to choose the one that is right for what you want it for .

One of the ones that I liked wasn’t waterproof, and I want to snorkel with mine , so that was no good .

The latest Go pro Hero 7 came top in the reviews . Having the best image stabilisation was one of the main reasons .

I don’t see excessive vibration in that video. Post editing may reduce if you you use in combination with 2.7k video. Never used one but how about a gimble.

I have GoPro but don’t notice any excessive heating but maybe my videos are relatively short.

to be fair the hero 2's used to do okay but didn't last long before braking. The problem that I used to face with them was that the places I could mount them on the old car used to right next to the vents on the engine bay so they used to get blasted with warm air (not to excessive as you could leave you hand there for a little while). The video editor I used to use would reduce the shaking when processing the clips automatically so what doesn't seem to bad used to feel worse if that makes sense. I will have another look at the go pros as they may have improved since I last used them have they improved the battery life?

I believe the latest incarnation has even better stabilisation than my GoPro hero 5 black. I think with with such a small device you’re never going to get a big enough battery but a 15-20k mh backup will charge it relatively quickly or spare GoPro batteries for a quick change-over if doing long videos.

It’s an action camera at the end of the day and can’t be compared to a “normal” video recorder in any respect. GoPro’s are susceptibil to low lighting conditions, good sunny days are best. :like:
