Hi everyone, It’s been a while since I posted on here, and things are going well with my GF so far. She’s currently in Copenhagen working as an Au Pair, and has a 2 year degree in hotel and restaurant management, but hasn’t worked in that area before. She’s lived in Europe for 4 years so far, and before coming here for her au pair work, she worked in a clothing store in Manila. While discussing the next steps, she has expressed concern that she’s worried about finding work in the U.K. Do you guys think she will struggle to find work in the U.K.? Her English is good, but has a few grammar issues at times, but she’s getting used to British English now at least haha. I’m in Norwich currently if that helps looking forward to hearing from you all!
I thought HRM degree was longer than 2 years? Easy to get a well paying hotel job in this area, couple of pinays work in them, some areas have unemployment however, as with everyone depends upon your skills and what you bring to the table.
The problem is she didn’t finish the whole 4 year degree, she only did 2 years and got some kind of qualification from that. I’m not sure what it’s called, but it’s not a bachelors degree.
That unfinished degree isn't worth much in the UK to be honest, speaking from experience here not hearsay, I know a few filipinas here, didn't quite finish degrees due to cash flow problems or family problems, it's like they have no quals.
Just remembered, the manageress in the Co-op in the next village is filipina, worked her way up from the tills (but she hates her job ).
Depends where your intending to live, if hotel work then needs to be in a city with quality hotels. Filipinas are known as hard workers in the main so depending what she wants to do in work depends how easy will be for her to get it. If she wants to work in care she will find getting a job easy, as she has experience with children that shouldn’t be to hard after she gets her DBS certificate which she would also need if she was to be a care assistant.
you will have to marry her for her to start work ......................she cannot work on a fiancee visa if you sponsor her
I got both bachelor and MBA in tourism and hospitality management degree but still struggle to get a job in the UK. I ended up working as a concierge even after having had managerial experience back in the Philippines and in Thailand. It's just a matter of luck I guess.
I think a lot depends on the area your in, lots of hotels in this area, lots, and they are often advertising for staff.
Probably. It's difficult to tell; there are loads of job adverts in my area too but can't even get to the interview stage even for admin jobs. Got fed up eventually so I just decided to go for a menial job and work my way up.
No such thing as a menial job, anyone indeed everyone has to do whatever they need to do to provide a roof over their heads and food on the table, work is work, I can think of 10 very good hotels on the same stretch of road near here, and lots of other hotels in the area, it depends on location I guess.
menial job, work your way up!! JFK and the Janitor The story goes like this. President John F. Kennedy was visiting NASA headquarters for the first time in 1961. While touring the facility, he introduced himself to a janitor who was mopping the floor and asked him what he did at NASA. “I’m helping put a man on the moon!”
