Yes you are quite correct that is the intent as I always understood it, but it is an active law with no age restrictions, and yes that kind of age disparity would more than raise eyebrows back home in Scotland.

I wasn't intending to support him, he was off his head taking the initial risk getting involved with that girl when he didn't know her age and it certainly was not responsible behaviour, and he was quite clearly an opportunist.

When I met Ana I was worried about the 14 years between us and rightly so as it turned out, she was not really a mature adult and still isn't although she thinks she is, she's 48 this year.

A couple of years back we went to Thailand, just me and my son, my mate in Chonburi had bought a new plane so off we went. Anyway we wanted to do a few other things, and headed down to jomtien to zip-line off the 55 storey tower, as we were walking past jomtien beach my son said "Dad, these guys think you have hit the jackpot with me" we had walked past an area where young Thai guys were oiling and massaging old western guys

I like Thailand actually - for the culture and the food. I have never visited for the seamer side of life there. I do remember though I went with my girlfriend (25 years ago now) when I was 22 and one evening we were in this really crowded street in phuket - and the crowd started to part like the red sea parting just a wave of people scrambling to move out of the way - as this stark naked girl walks down the street and then vanishes into some bar. I have no idea what it was about but man I've never seen a crowd of people part so quickly not even for police.

Best food in SEA, my sister married a Thai, my nephew bought an apartment in Bangkok, I have actually visited dozens of times over the years, my good lady loves the place.

I wouldn't be surprised if he did know her age and knew that she was legal to have sex over there at 16, as it is in the UK
    https://www.fpa.org.uk/factsheets/law-on-sex

I remember when I was a young man under the age of thirty.
All the young men back then used to talk about girls who wore so much make-up that could easily have been thirteen.
We all knew that it was important to be careful.
I suppose some young men were not as careful.

Well young men at least have the excuse of youth. I don't find the idea of a 22 year old hitting on a 17 year even to be on the same scale of repugnance as a 73 year old who is more than old enough to know better...

(edit: to clarify this post I was writing about age ranges that I felt were increasingly unacceptable to be dating a 17 year old - and not commenting on age differences in a more general sense)

I guess in my personal scale it would be 22-27 ok 27-39 getting more and more desperate and creepy.. 40 onward - definitely deranged and bizarre leading up to the incomprehensible heights of 73. I just can't get my head around what possesses a 73 year old guy to date a 17 year old.

Yes, that scenario reminds me of the "strange things" I saw early in the morning in Thailand, and one image I have tried to expunge over the years. Of course it was difficult for me to see as I am "straight". I do understand that "straight" is not the norm for millions though.

Both my super sensible son and Er indoors said the parents were pimping out the daughter, Dale took advantage, Er indoors said there was no love between the couple.

An interesting article, but one that I feel has been taken from a very narrow and overly scientific viewpoint.
I'm not sure that the author has the same definition of 'ideal' that I would choose.

This is a thorny issue that a number of people on this forum are sensitive about - because I've seen big age differences on here - and so I'm sort of reluctant to write about it for fear of offending somebody without meaning to.

Of course, taken in isolation, it makes most sense (from a biological view) for a man of any age to be having children with a healthy 18 year old to 'maximize his chances of having offspring that survive' - and that's fine - if that's the only thing he is considering.

However, I would suggest that relationships aren't simply science, and people don't live in isolation - they live in societies.

It seems to me that arguments against large age differences (particularly ones as extreme as the documentary) would include not only the social aspect and the views that other people in society would have - but also the sheer impracticality of a much older man even surviving long enough to see his children reach maturity. I also feel that differences in outlook, interest and energy levels would play their part. We saw that problem demonstrated in the documentary with the visit to the amusement park.

Finally, I also feel consideration of the emotional cost to any children needs to be considered - when Dad is unable to ride the roller coaster due to his medication - when Dad kicks the bucket when they are in their twenties (or earlier) or when the kid discovers on sports day that his Dad is the same age as his best mates Grandad - and so on - for example.

I think Mick Jagger became a father at age 73. I personally feel that was a reckless decision. He's 77 now with a 4 year old child. How can he keep up with the energy levels of a toddler? His kid will heartbroken when he dies - and it's kind of likely just from the statistics that the child may have to cope with the loss of a parent whilst they are still a child. Sure - he's maximized his chances of having offspring that survive. From a textbook point of view it's a great success. But it still doesn't feel quite 'ideal' to me. :)

    John,
As you well know, this forum is more likely than other forums to see large differences in age between husbands and wives so your many comments about not wanting to offend anyone is actually disingenuous and you are highlighting something that you know will irritate some members, me being one.
    For this reason, "I'm out".

Sorry @aposhark I didn't realize that you were affected. I didn't keep a mental tally of all the age differences - @Methersgate was the only one I remembered and he's not around - and I wasn't looking for an argument but given the thread concerns a ridiculously old man and a ridiculously young girl it doesn't seem unreasonable for me to reply to your post concerning ideal age differences. I'll drop the topic.

And please @aposhark if my comment a few posts above about the age ranges of people dating a 17 year old irritated you, I apologise - please let me clarify. If we take a (say) 30 year age difference then a 30 year old / 65 year old is very different to a 17 / 47 year old. I remember my 19 year old daughter reacted when some topic came up about someone her age dating a 40 year old. 'yuck that's sooooo old' was her (dare I say it) predictable response.

I personally have a problem with older or in this case very old men who should know better bedding very young women who are in a third world country and a disadvantaged position - and I suppose this thread highlighted it. No offense is meant personally to yourself. Now I really will drop the topic. :)

Maybe so Girlie can't see herself onscreen, such is life, and this entire thread started out just to highlight an oddly packed suitcase :ninja: what a tangent it took off on.
