How about another of the bigger islands? How about Palawan? Just another thought for the "pot".

Huh? I'm enquiring about places so I can go somewhere nice with her. But also if we go somewhere expensive she will feel less comfortable as she doesn't want me to pay for everything she does, she's far to proud for that. So it has to be somewhere where she is financially equal, so to speak.

Looking more deeply into this, it has come to pass, that the Landlord will pay this tax for tenants. Which has come as a relief to me. :D

Southeast Asia is relatively cheap, even first world countries around Asia if you are not picky on where you stay and what you eat. Plus there are a lot of airline promos where you can purchase itin advance for a very cheap price. There is even a Filipina who went to Paris on a vacation for less than 800GBP all in.

If I may ask, what does she do? Just to be able to suggest more places that are budget friendly.

Greenspin, I took my ex British gf to Thailand about 8 years ago. It was a vacation. We thoroughly enjoyed it. Hotels and food were great and good value. And although there didnt seem a lot to see in the way of places of interest, the various temples / palaces were something special. We staid in Bangkok. I regret not visiting the floating market.

I took my ex Fillipina fiancee to Thailand several times. Among other places we visited the floating market. I remember her buying a pair of shoes from the boat (sandals actually). Sadly places like that are tourist traps, but still worth visiting.

She loved the food, especially the Thai KFC (?), and the big fish which are grilled at little stalls on the street.

Important thing to do is to get a schedule planned, in Bangkok stay at a hotel near the Skytrain, and plan your trips well.
    Example:
    • Get skytrain to the Saphan Taksin station. walk down the steps, ignore cruise boat touts and get the local Express boat for a few baht (20 pence?), get off several stops along the river by the palace, visit the palace, you can also use a ferry to cross the river and visit wat Arun.

LOL Dave. We got caught by the boat touts. We went on a tour of the backwater canals and paid over the odds.

Skytrain and Skywalk was good. :like:

Dave, am I correct in saying the floating market is huge?

Not certain, I do not remember it as being overly large, but that was a few years ago.

That was one of the days when I did pay a bit more cash to have a private tour to the floating market, a rose garden, an elephant show, some other places as well.

Are you thinking about the Chatuchak weekend market, not floating, but that one is fairly huge...

It was the floating market that caught my eye and had intended to go when I was there, but didnt get around to it. Seemed so colourful. But I cant remember the detail and must be confusing the two markets.

I think they may set up a PAYG scheme.

Why does it seem that Thailand is the holiday choice for the ex-girlfriends/fiances/wives?

Chatuchak Market is a large weekend flea market in the heart of Bangkok while the Floating Market is in the outskirts. Been to both and while it is a good experience, the prices are ridiculous! A simple coconut juice is easily 20% more in the floating market compared to say, Pratunam. It is designed for the tourists now.

Near to the floating market is the tiger monastery (?) you can see lots of tigers with monks and have your pictures taken. They seem pretty tame but still are in a chain.

Another good place to visit is Ayutthaya where you can see old temples and the like. Pattaya is an hour away and is a beach town. It is similar to Clark/Subic but the prostitution is still way more pronounced in my opinion.

Not the ex wife. Noooo. She would never have gone. The ex gf. She had never been to SE Asia and found it so different.

Also Cambodia. 21 day visa free for Filipinos, $20-$25 for others and direct flights with Cebu Air and others to the Philippines. Siem Reap for Angkor Wat. You can include trips to Vietnam and Thailand from there as well so you get a threefer. Everyone accepts US dollars at a better rate than banks offer and very stable.
