There's an American member of another Forum I subscribe to who lives on Panay. He's normally very quick to report any outtages and he hasn't done so since the Yolanda strike. I think he has a Globe SIM.

You must find the situation extremely frustrating Frank, I know I would be ripping my hair out.

Have you explored all the other modes of communication? You cant go on like this forever. Anyway, good luck and I hope you find a solution soon.

    Why haven't you got Skype?

i have got skype i use them to phone her mobile, but it is the same as those cheap numbers you can use get through then continually being cut of and having dial again and again .
i did buy her a tablet and we did manage video chat a couple of times but its broke now. Even dialing direct on my house phone do not get through.
The only thing that works is sms on skype they get to her eventually but i get few reply's back, i think she thinks it costs to much..
When i got through this week after many trys i could hear her but could not make out what she was saying as the line was so bad.
Any ways five months to go and i will be in phill for six months already bought my ticket just make me feel good.

Five months is a long time Frank, in my seven years of courtship with my good lady I don't think I've done two days without seeing her on Skype. You need to resole this somehow.

Does she have a landline or does she have to use mobile internet?

Is there not an internet café near to where she lives where she could use a faster internet connection or landline?

Just get her an internet connection if she doesn't have one. And get a roaming sim so she can text you for 1 peso.

That price is about right for a SMS sent and received within the country. SMS to a cellphone abroad are somewhat more expensive and vary carrier by carrier and by plan within a carrier. Smart's "Text 'n' Talk" is one of the better options and a SMS sent to the UK will cost around 25 Pesos on a prepaid basis. You don't need to select "roaming" (which all SIMs are capable of) in order to send a SMS abroad.

A much cheaper option is to use Skype to send a SMS to a UK cellphone which costs £0.056 (4 Pesos) per 160 characters. And it's the same price for a SMS sent to a Philippine cellphone from the UK.

If you have a Smart roaming sim it costs 1 peso for someone in The Philippines to send you a text from their own mobile.

I had one when my wife was in Phils and she uses it now she is here.

We use Skype to send SMS to Philippines and Smart roaming to receive messages.

Ah, now I understand! How much does it cost you to receive a text from the Philippines?

    It costs nothing to receive.

Some information on Smart Roaming SIMs here: http://www.plugandtalk.co.uk/home/faq/questions.html

Note Answer 3: SMS from the Philippines to the SMART Pinoy SIM will cost only P1 (charged to the sender).

So it really is just 1 peso for her to text you this way. Well worth getting one.

That was my wife's pet project.... Without any prompting, just on her own........
Every time I sent some money, she skimmed some off ... So, after a while she had a fully fitted toilet and shower room built in the back garden, with all the gubbins...
