A lucky break was that there was no Tsunami afterwards. But still very upsetting for many Although she is in Cebu, and well away from the epicentre, my wife strongly hinted that she wanted to come back home............ asap........
Heard that airport is close as runway is badly damaged (cracks in the runway) and govt is flying via butuan. The same with the sea port. Aftershocks were felt as far away as davao and cotabato
My heart goes out to the victims, last week we had two quakes 4.2 and 3.6 no damage done, but that was my first experience of quakes. Not a nice experience.
I was only in Surigao last month as well, on my way to Siargao Island. Luckily the people I know there are safe.
Really strange coincidence, there was extremely powerful earthquake hit Mindanao exactly 4 years ago, almost to the day. http://www.philstar.com/headlines/2013/02/16/909659/update-magnitude-6.2-earthquake-jolts-mindanao
Melody read that some very long, strange-looking fish (ribbon fish aka oarfish) was netted a week or two before the quake. Apparently the fishermen were not very pleased to have caught such a monster as it is viewed as a portent of doom and disaster. The capture of this rare oarfish in Gen San is a sign of an upcoming earthquake I just harrumphed when she told me, because I saw this as the perfect opportunity to exercise my conjugal right to harrumph, and I have married a superstitious Filipina. And then the earthquake struck.......
I think there is scientific explanation to that one. Animals are more sensitive to vibrations than humans so its possible that those fishes/creatures went up the surface when they felt a change in their sorroundings. The same is the case of the last known 'predicted' earthquake in china (ie animals were restless etc and the governor ordered evacuation of the town a few days before earthquake struck)
