....for failing to stand for national anthem at cinema!!

Footage filmed by police inside the cinema yesterday shows only a partial response to the national anthem
Police arrested 34 moviegoers in Batangas after they failed to stand up for the Philippine national anthem.

Local police chief, Chief Inspector Alfie Salang, confirmed today (Thursday, September 6) that the film fans were detained for showing “disrespect” yesterday afternoon.

He said the arrests were part of local police force’s operation “Oplan Bandila”, which aims to punish people violating Republic Act 8491, or the “Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines”.

As part of this crackdown, police officers are being sent to monitor every film screening in the area.

One of the people arrested in Lemery town yesterday said they weren’t aware the cops were inside the cinema and claimed that he thought the anthem was a commercial.

Provincial police director Senior Superintendent Edwin Quilates said: “This serves as a stern warning to everyone that we shall at all times give due respect to the Philippine National Anthem while being played, as stated in Section 38, Chapter 2 of RA 8491.”

Section 38 states that “when the National Anthem is played at a public gathering, whether by a band or by singing or both or reproduced by any means, the attending public shall sing the anthem. The singing must be done with fervor.”

The Flag and Heraldic Code specifies that “as a sign of respect, all persons shall stand at attention and face the Philippine flag, if there is one displayed, and if there is none, they shall face the band or the conductor. At the first note, all persons shall execute a salute by placing their right palms over their left chest.”

The code also stipulates that those in the military, scouting, citizen’s military training and security guard uniforms “shall give the salute prescribed by their regulations. The salute shall be completed at the last note of the anthem”.

The penalty for failing to observe the code consists of a fine of up to 20,000 pesos or imprisonment of up to one year, or both.

If only they (cops) took the throwing of litter/basura as seriously.

I suppose that has nothing to do with 'disrespect' or 'National Pride' ?
