BRITAIN is blocking the creation of a European Union army because the Government objects to an “operational HQ” being set up in Brussels, according to EU diplomats.
The idea of a unified EU military force has long been discussed but Theresa May is allegedly standing in the way of the army taking another step towards completion.

The EU is desperate to found a Military Planning and Conduct Capabilities (MPCC) unit but amid rising tensions between London and Brussels, the project has stalled.

It would be tasked with setting up EU military training missions in Somalia, a failed state riddled with terrorist activity, Mali and Central African Republic.
Member states reached a political agreement in March, but Britain is now objecting to the wording of “operational HQ”.

Ultimate approval for the move requires unanimity, so Britain, which remains a full member of the EU, is putting the brakes on the supra-national army coming to fruition.

Poland has also objected, but has not publicly done so on the same grounds as Britain.

European diplomats are adamant the move is politically motivated, with the General Election looming on June 8 and Brexit negotiations taking a turn for the worse after Jean-Claude Juncker’s trip to Downing Street.

A senior EU diplomat told Politico that the text of the document ratifying the move has been changed to accommodate Mrs May’s wishes, but Britain is still blocking the move.

The official, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “It’s clearly part of the pre-election game.”

Downing Street, however, denies its opposition is due to the General Election.

If approved, the EU army will not simply wade into foreign conflicts as an overt fighting force, rather it will take a “non-executive” stance, meaning it could operate in an advisory role.
