Hopefully any other members who have got to the citizenship stage can comment on this. Sounds to me as if some jobsworth doesnt know what they are talking about.

There are 2 ways to obtain British citizenship one is the visa route to ILR and then citizenship the B1 is taken at ILR stage or before the other route is citizenship by naturalisation at BC application stage you would require a b1 to be submitted

Another reason that a new test maybe required is that the previous one was at a centre not on the current approved list.

It seems there is a possibility that the ILR was granted a few years ago and since then British Citizenship requirements have changed? This illustrates what can happen if you delay applying for Citizenship and then forced to meet extra requirements.

I am helping my wife apply for her naturalisation using the online portal. For the referee of professional standing .. do we need to show the evidence of their qualification or will the people doing the checks find this out for themselves?

My wifes application was made last year and no proof of referee status was provided and neither of the referees were approached by the Home Office. Due to the pandemic the Home Office wrote after several months to confirm the application was successful, however the official invite would be delayed and to enquire further if not heard from them after 3 months.

Well exactly 3 months later the ceremony invite was received, intriguingly the letter was dated nearly 3 weeks before actually recieved and gave a deadline to book the ceremony within 21 days of the letter (its usually within 14 days).
Our local authority will only do ceremonies in person (not online, unlike some other areas) and no guests permitted, just other applicants.

So curtesy of the pandemic, from online application to actual ceremony it has taken just over 7 months to attend citizenship ceremony.

However, to travel as a British Citizen requires Passport Application or Apply for an alternative proof of citizernship (the certificate awarded is not valid for travel and the ILR BRP must be returned or risk £1000 fine).
