Where do I find the trade in value of a Car?
Is there a standard trade in value in UK ?

    This is the car:
    Vehicle make BMW
    Date of first registration Dec-14
    Year of manufacture 2014
    Cylinder capacity 1598 cc
    CO₂ emissions 134 g/km
    Fuel type PETROL
    Vehicle status Untaxed
    Vehicle colour BLUE
    Vehicle type approval M1
    Wheelplan 2 AXLE RIGID BODY
Date of last V5C (logbook) issued 22-Apr-15

    I got this off Go.Compare:

    ThirdPartyFire&Theft £843/£200 Excess
    Comprehensive £864/£195 Excess

Do these rates look right - look very similar I always though 3Pty was cheap and comprehensive was expensive.

    Vehicle Tax Rates
    Tax Single 12mth Payment £190/Year

Trade In Value - Not Sure ???

Also does the date of the last logbook (V5C) mean/imply the car has only had one owner since registration?

there are guides online--like Parkers. But i just look at same cars listed on Auto trader and ebay. Also theres "We buy any car" for the rock bottom price.

As for car insurance--theres no rhyme or reason. Last month i bought my wife an old mercedes A class automatic to practice learning to drive in. Her insurance--a learner--with no no claims discount and me added as named driver £380 a year.

I usually use the DVLA to check the status of various vehicles.

Insurance is a bit of a nightmare experience depending on which company.
I shop around, as I hate the lack of customer loyalty shown by many, Normally I pay around 5/600 quid a year, for the full Comp, with Legal, Claim Protection and all that malarky.

If you've not been insured in the UK you're starting again regards no claims, Insurance will be high. Third party only makes no sense these days very little savings and implies you might be a bigger risk as you're trying to cut corners on price.

Tax looks about right for the engine size.

Parkers guide for valuation but I agree with Malcolm see what the same model is selling for on Autotrader.

V5C I don't think you can draw a conclusion based on last issue date, it could be a delivery miles vehicle that had its first owner as the manufacturer, it might have two owners or three you never know without seeing the document.

With 8 years no claims my last insurance at age 65 was 500 quid for a two litre Honda Accord, the insurance gets rapidly worse as you age.

with 9 yrs + NCB ( more like 30 yrs in fact ), aged 75, my 07 fiesta diesel cost me last november £230 with tesco--up £20 from the previous year. This included wife as named driver--learner. And some business usage. Total mileage 5000 a year ( in fact i do a lot less --19,000 miles in 7 years).

But now i want my wife driving so i can pack it in. No pleasure in it any more.

If you think there is no pleasure in it now Malc, I dare you to try driving 1 day around your old stomping ground up here in the Wolverhampton/Dudley/Birmingham area, some absolute idiots around nowadays, driving red lights, wrong way around roundabouts, cars constantly going bang bang like bloody fireworks, main beam headlights in your eyes, kids doing wheelies on bikes down the high street, yeah you would love it not... Ohhh I forgot to mention the blasted temporary traffic lights here there and everywhere..

Sounds like my place, Dumaguete. Like Metro Manila only much smaller. Crazy and most don't have a driving license.

You're right but I've now been told the V5C shows only one other owner, the dealer who pre-registered the car.

I got a pre-reg delivery miles Honda back in 2001 for £16000 a discount of about £6500 at the time, when the V5C is about a year after manufacturer it means they couldn't shift the car or a buyer backed out.

I've got 30 odd years no claims as well it's just that I took a break from driving when my car died in 2012 and got a car again in 2016 hence restarting the NCB and high insurance costs for several years.

I'm quite sure the max NCB anyone can have is 7yrs after that additional years do not count t least that is how it used to be many years ago? it stands to reason if they gave a discount for every year you did not claim the insurance companies would have to end up paying a person with 50yrs NCB to take insurance with them.

BigMac is quite correct the very best place to look and gain a good grounding of the worth of any vehicle is Autotrader, in fact each time you bring a car up on their site they will give advice if the car is fair good or high priced to the current market value, added to that they will also advise how the mileage is for that particular year.

Two years ago I returned from PH to live for the long term back in UK and I was faced with this same problem, starting off as a new insurer with no NCB, I had to look at something small with a small engine at a reasonable price for around £7K or under, so I chose a Yaris, that first year the insurance for this was £270 bear in mind this is in Scotland had I been in England this would have been closer to £400, the following year this was exactly the same price even with my first year of NCB added in, however that was due to the massive price increase for all insurance that year, halfway during that second year of owning this Yaris I decided I could not live with it any longer, for years I had spoiled myself driving big luxury cars like Volvos 240's, 740's and before leaving for PH the last car I had was a Honda Accord estate similar to what Oor Oss has at the moment, I paid £7K for that in 2009 a third of the new price it was 4yrs of age, my neighbour now owns this car now 19yrs of age and still going well, now the Yaris was not a bad car in fact it was a great example of the model in pristine condition, but like most small cars it was noisy and I could not live with it any longer.

I had bought a Honda car in PH the first Auto I have ever owned with a CVT transmission and was hankering to have a similar car with this CVT trans, however I no longer had the desire for a large car only something with some added comfort, actually I had been doing my research on suitable cars for many months, for sure the best of the smaller cars were mostly German, both BMW and Audi are rated very high on their driving performance but not rated all that well for reliability and when they do break the price of parts is criminal.

It would have to be either Toyota or Honda for me the two most reliable brands after Lexus but these were well out of my price range or so I thought? I then discovered they do a small hatchback actually it is just a Corolla with a different overcoat and a lovely interior waistcoat, well I made up my mind this was going to be my next car, well eventually I was to find just the right car for me, I really pushed the boat out to have this, but also in the back of my mind this is likely to be the last car I ever buy and after all I'm only spending my Children's inheritance, so I now have this Lexus CT200H the CT stands for comfort Tourer and the H for Hybrid, this has the exact same 1.8ltr engine as the Toyota Prius coupled with the same CVT gearbox, the Prius has been on our roads for 25yrs now, the Lexus may be cheaper to purchase than the Prius this being in big demand for use as Taxis being just so reliable.

Having driven this Lexus car to Birmingham and back a 700ml round trip and 14hrs in the saddle I would say it lives up to its name of Grand Tourer, this returned 55mpg on this trip, it is a peach of a Car which I would recommend to anyone, some people are quite negative on Hybrids and say what happens when the Hybrid battery fails, well a replacement for this is only £600 about half the price of most other Hybrids and an easy DIY fix.

It is around that, some insurers will give you 9 or more.

But both Malcolm and I were anecdotaly talking about the actual number of years we had never made a claim.

I did a quick check on this there seems to be no specific amount of years for this, but the Max discount appears to be 70% which you may attain in 7yrs? Jim if you were up here in Scotland you would pay around £150 less for your insurance, with only two years NCB I am around £370 for my Lexus which is insurance group 19, a slightly newer Corolla by only one year was in a higher group, which is a bit odd considering they are much the same car and they both had the same price tag on them?

The problem with insurance is the devil is in the detail and most fail to take into account the "excess". All very well people saying they're only paying £300 pa but forgetting to mention the whopping £500 excess they have and the fact, they live in the middle of no where, they have no legal, no no claims protection, no breakdown, no windscreen cover etc etc etc.:D

Mine's bound to be high because I have no no claims discount... I'm actually with AXA here but I don't suppose they'll give me credit for that...

I should send AXA an email and ask.
