Good question. I just had a look, and it looks like the long-stay Visa there is €99 for spouses.

Well I don't know. Even without trying to bend the rules, how does it make sense that if you're British it'll cost you £2,000 to bring your wife home if you live in the UK, but you can do it for free if you live in France??

£2000---are you kidding. we in the UK are paying 4 times that amount for our spouse to settle in the UK.

ive got a great idea--i'll go live in france--bring mine over for that 99 euro you mentioned---then bring her in to the UK for free---just like you can. simples. job done.

It makes sense if your country sees its citizens as a cash cow lucky for some of us the EU has respected its citizens rights and each European Country could choose what to do so Portugal for example treats its countrymen/women equaly as it appears does France:)

And of course nothing to do with the inescapable fact that for migrants (legal and illegal) the UK is by far the most popular destination in Europe and one of the most popular in the world.

That assertion has nothing to do with the spouses of British citizens any more than you claiming Tax Credits while living in Malta

Well, that might justify making it difficult/expensive for other immigrants. But putting that much burden on UK citizens to bring in their legitimate spouses home seems crazy to me. Especially when EU citizens living in the UK can do it much more cheaply (although I suppose Brexit might change that in the future...)

Actually the visa is free for EU citizens, according to the links Mattecube sent.
Then she would have to request a residence permit, though. I'm not sure how much that costs or how long it takes...

Just found this page (in French): http://www.tarn.gouv.fr/famille-d-europeen-en-france-demande-de-carte-de-a2733.html#F22117
According to it, the "titre de séjour" (residence permit) is also free for "close relatives" of EU citizens!

The UK is in the position of being the most popular destination for migration, certainly among EU countries and possibly in the wider world. And immigration is a 'hot potato' issue. Processing visas does actually cost quite a lot of money and frankly why should the taxpayer be burdened with the cost of processing others' visas? It is right and proper for those costs to be met by the applicant - and, yes, there probably is an element of varying the fees to control demand.
