Apple closes all stores outside China

Apple CEO Tim Cook has announced that the tech company will be temporarily closing all stores "outside of Greater China" until 27 March to help prevent the spread of Covid-19.

The statement linked to Mr Cook's tweet dated 13 March said all stores in "Greater China" had reopened "as of today".

Not a realistic option in the Philippines, and it is still a vector for transmission although a far more controllable vector than visiting supermarkets.

There is also the point that in reality we don't have the capacity in the supply chain to deliver everyone's groceries, we just don't have the drivers or the logistics in place to manage more than the few percent which we currently supply this way, not without radical re-purposing of existing logistics operations for other types of supply chains.

Also the IT systems of companies like Tesco or Ocado would struggle with a tenfold increase in demand on their systems.

    From the UK thread.

Can you let us know how bad it is over there, Jim?
    What have you seen?

My wife has told me that people die in the Philippines because they cannot afford basic drugs.
Of course we all worried by what could happen over where you are.

Mike, as far as I can make out it's Manila that's the problem, It's over populated and folk are passing the virus on. Here in the provence just a few coronavirus. Flights in and out of Manila are canceled and there is a curfew.
If I know more about it I will let you know. Must be frustrating for your wife not knowing what's going on.

    Hi Jim.
    Are you feeling better?

My wife phones her family in the province. She hasn't said much but she is often quiet.
I worry more than her o_O

    I'm almost fully recovered, thanks.

No need to worry about the virus in the provence, especially on a small island. There's been another virus incident involving a counselor that came from Manila to Dumaguete, he was put in the same Hospital I was in.

Edit, I have heard he died.

Great to hear you are almost back to normal, and long may it continue ;)

They are not allowing anyone onto her island, Jim.
I don't know how watertight that will be.

I have a feeling that the number of cases reported so far is way lower than reality and that the administration have realised this hence the lockdown.

"48,000 people have recovered from corona virus. This is what should be all over the news."

No what needs to be all over the news is that there will not be enough hospital facilities to treat everyone who gets this, people need to change their behaviour and reduce the chances of transmission, if they think it is all overblown they won't do that.

And if they don't change behaviour then lots more people will die Malcolm, that is the honest truth.

That Mike is a very good report and I agree with almost all of it, but I still maintain that zoonotic jumps are clearly rare or all of this would have happened already many many times over.

Putting ourselves into even more of a glass case is, yes, probably required now, that's what city living and the modern world is about, we as humans have isolated ourselves from nature and the world is now a global city, it has been for years we are so interconnected.

    Very good report.
