I'd be interested to know the story if you are willing to share after your trip.

Certainly will, probably start a new thread on the subject.
Dare I ask are you thinking about your kids looking into it?

Think I'd want to fact check it's Chzechia and not Chechnia before I sent mine... (kids that is) ... few of my wife's family I wouldn't worry about too much! :D

No John, my daughter has a future in the UK, she's British and it will he her choice if she wants to have a future here, my son will hopefully qualify well enough to have better life options in the Philippines and possibly abroad when he finishes his IT course at the Univerity of Santo Thomas (UST) in Manila in another 3 and half years time.

I'm just interested and intrigued by the options that are available in parts of Europe for Filipinos given that they have almost no opportunities in the UK apart from nursing.

My daugther is thinking about doing Med-Tech now (effectively nursing) at University when she graduates Senior High School in 18 months time, although she could come here and do that if she really wanted anyway.

edit: I'm still angry about the opportunities of freedom of movement in Europe that my daughter lost because of Brexit.

Her moving up ceremony in late May this year, the lad is a 100% Filipino school friend who suffers from albinism, can't really go out in the sun at all.

    Yes I understand.

Actually, I take a special interest in your posts as I really cannot decide what is going to be best for my two who are a bit younger than yours...

At the moment we're planning on moving to the UK next year but if we don't or it doesn't work out for some reason, I'm thinking plan B will be to move them to Manila suburbs or somewhere for better school options, opportunities/hospitals and the language advantage etc.

    Interruption ... back now:

Whatever we do, we have to move because the school options here are so bad - I had a peek at the fees at St Michael and they are not a lot more than we pay here + all the add ons for event days of course - Unfortunately, our children are basically being taught by brand new junior teachers all the time - most of whom are clueless :( Also, there is no proper discipline because the Sister's don't want to upset any parents that might work for the government - hence the reason most of the new teachers leave :)

Anyway, very nice photo - Won't be surprised if my daughter goes down the nursing/doctor route... the boy, not a clue, I've decided he might be suffering from what they call Inatentive ADHD... he's not thick... very good at memorizing things but will do his homework... and then forget to hand it in or just leave it somewhere - lol - Another reason I feel I have a duty to get them back there... so we can get him checked out.

SMSI is about 37,000 PHP a year for Junior High School (JHS), they offer senior high school but it's not a full curriculum you can't pick STEM for example.

SMSI was ok for my kids we live quite close by, but in the years since Covid, they've been firing most of the teachers at the end of each year (short contracts I guess rather than firing) the teachers were good enough and mostly very nice but I was getting upset about the lack of continuity year to year.

Other schools like Perpetual (DALTA) offer JHS, SHS and College and University, Perpetual has multiple campuses around Manila and Cavite, mid to south Luzon, my son did his two years SHS at Perpetual graduating back in June, prices for James were about 50,000 a year but if they have ESC you get an 18,000 discount off that via the SHSVP (Senior High School Voucher Programme) for Junior High with ESC they can get 13,000 a year discount.

My daughter Janna is at Perpetual in the Las Pinas campus this year and the fees were lower than James at about 45,000 but there is still a lot of blended learning though with all the schools in Metro Manila and I'm not that happy about that, it's a commercial money decision by these schools to accomodate more students with the same physical resources, i.e. profit.

The extras at both of the schools I have experience of are not too bad, books will cost about 6000 to 8000 there are some trips that cost a bit but not a huge cost, saying that my daughter is competing tomorrow in the Mr & Mrs SHS Pagent and that is costing me an arm and a leg, all of my premium bond wins in the last three months :D

Just for info my daughter gave me some feedback on the pay of teachers in the private school sector, they actually get LESS pay than the teachers in the state schools, so the good teachers tend go to the state schools however class sizes are a lot bigger in state schools at over 40 students sometimes, saying that private schools will have class sizes of over 30 students as well, SMSI in later years had bigger class sizes compared to when Janna and James started there back in the day (James started around 2009 - 2010 in elementary).

This was the graduation ceremony hall at the CCP back in June for Perpetual SHS

    Thanks

Graduating big city style.... generally tend to be white plastic chair affairs out here in the provinces!

Your son looks like a giant! Perpetual - :like: - P50k - P100k pa seems reasonable to me.

Yes the teachers in the public school get a good deal.

It's actually a bit of a game where we are... the teachers make far more offering tutorials (basically the answers to the up coming exams  ) to the students - so I do wonder if there's really any real incentive to teach in class!

My view is it is just about a step p from the Philippines!
They are employed by Foxconn, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foxconn
Visa, 2 year work visa, work residency permit arranged and paid by Foxconn
Job spec is newbies work in warehouse/stores and move onto assembly of circuit boards
They live about a 20 minute drive from the factory in prefab dorms 4/5 to a dorm. The dorm has basic facilities
employed 3 x 12 hour shifts in any week, cannot take 2nd job (visa rules) eg boys were due to work this week Monday,Tuesday and Friday
accommodation fees are deducted at source. Pay is pitiful, and they are tied to he company if they leave then the residency permit is voided
Back to pay a rough fag packet exercise suggested that after taxes and accommodation they are left with about 4 pounds per hour (pond sign doesn't work on my keyboard!)
    So not great!

    Very nice photos.

Thanks for that, it's not much but it's a lot more than many get here!

I've done warehouse work a few times, many years ago, it's definitely a step up from doing the cr :like:

£4/hr ... equates to about £50 a day, roughly P3500, which is roughly 6 times what my builder (who's good) charges me for one days work.

And there was I thinking you were going to watch the footy.

You can hold the Alt key and type the numbers 0163 on the numeric keypad and voila a £ (pound sign) should appear. :D
