The ranks of the poor in Philippines are moderating as the nation sustains among the fastest economic growth in the region.
Filipinos living below the poverty line were estimated at 21 percent of the population in the first half of 2018 compared with 27.6 percent in the same period in 2015, the Philippines Statistics Authority said in a report on Wednesday. The poverty incidence, based on a survey conducted every three years, eased even as inflation accelerated last year.
Poverty declined as infrastructure projects created new jobs and the state expanded its cash handouts. “Thanks to sustained economic growth and critical and broad-based reforms and investments that have translated to employment-generation and social protection,” according to Economic Planning Secretary Ernesto Pernia.

What's the 'poverty line' in the Phils... about p5000 a month ? I suppose those now on p5,500 a month selling fish or firewood 12 hours a day must be feeling pretty comfortable then.

I don't know what some of these Statistics people are smoking.

But it Bloomberg so it must be right!!
Mind you where we are it`s a huge task finding an unskilled labourer for 8.500 a month..
Forget finding a carpenter or CHB mason these days..A rare species. If by miracle you find one they want 650-700 Per day or 16K per month.
Many of them are turning that down for price work only and earn double amounts above.

Yeah, we've been lucky so far, employing relatives who are in the trade... p350/day for labour, and p500 for foreman/craftsman.

Have to pick your time though, as most of them don't seem short of work. :like:

I have a stack of boxes of floor tiles waiting to go down, once the tiler relly has finished a contract he's working on.

Agreed Graham. Building my beach house at the moment, it's P350 a day for general labourer and P500 a day for skilled workers.

500 a day? so thats--say --£175 a month--allowing for some weekends off. my mrs sends 4 times that back each month.

    so--would £175 a month keep a family ?

She says they get p150 for working between 5 am and 6pm.

Labourers and alike are generally paid daily because you don’t know if they will turn up the following day. They may disappear for days and then roll up when they need more money or they are finished with another job.

My niece just passed the board exam after failing 2 times previously..Cost her Father more then the original 4 year course over a 2+ year period due to expensive revision courses!
