Energy Prices will likely go up this winter

SSE announced yesterday that they were putting prices up in October by 9% (they go by the names Scottish Hydro, Swalec and Southern Electric) quoting rising wholesale costs as the reason. As history has shown us these last so many years, once one energy company breaks the ice to become the first one to increase their prices then soon after the other suppliers follow.

If you haven't got a fixed priced tariff for your gas or electricity, you should give serious consideration to joining one as soon as possible!

Most of these tariffs come with lock ins, charges if you change supplier before the end of the contract. Though it might seem unfair it can often be the better deals that have the worst lock in charges, but the most important factor is what you think might happen with prices. Don't worry if you plan to move home as these long term energy contracts are all portable, you can take them with you to your new home.

Also read reviews if you are thinking of switching!

Yes, I was a little surprised to hear this on the news.

    I'm guessing others may follow.

Don't suppose my winter fuel allowance will be increased :(

May well even be reduced or withdrawn :erm:

Winter fuel allowance is still there and for people on guaranteed pension credit or pension savings credit you may also be eligible for a £130 credit on your electricity in the start of 2013 from your electricity supplier!

Though you must ask your supplier for it.

And ask them for it before October....

Haha, don't qualify for pension credits. Not just yet anyway.

Winter fuel payment is not means tested and is available to all those over 60 years.
I should get the full payment this year since I.m no longer sharing payment with my dad.
Every little helps as they say.
But thanks for taking time to provide that information.

That's a shame. I know the rules on Qualifying Age were changed recently.
Might just be that your date of birth just missed.

Might be worth clicking on the link to double check. Remember to enter 'Female' as the gender.
