You and Mattecube will be able to have a good chat in Spanish one day :like:

Besides, if you have a few alcoholic drinks together, you will both think you're fluent.
It is easier to speak a foreign language without inhibitions.

Spain is still a wonderful country, Jim.
The problem for many people is the 90 days in 180 days that they can stay there.
I haven't looked at residency for many years.
Back in the day, to be able to stay all year, it was necessary to show that you had £25,000 in the bank and jump through many other hoops.

The visa process is pretty much as it is here and you have to have an earning capacity slightly in excess of 25500 euros and additional income per adult of 6400 euros visa cost start about 80 euros, you can stay in Spain for 6 months but you will need a Schengen visa.Individuals can obtain permanent residency in Spain after having legally lived in the country for a period of five uninterrupted years. When they fulfill this specific condition, they can apply for permanent residency and then gain the right to live for the rest of their lives in the country.3

Permanent residency is still difficult then, especially the five year wait
Lots of celebrities moved there so there must have been some "greasing the wheels".

Been a good while since I was in Spain but there was a lot of Eastern European and Russian money being washed through the southern Spanish property market there... if many Brits go home I could envisage a domino effect...

I just read the articles... cars and health insurance! Just like here...
