I decided some years ago that I would not bring cash in with me, but would carry two cards (one will always get stopped by Barclays Bank's automated fraud detection system simply because it has been used in the Philippines, and I have to call the bank (free of charge) to get the stop lifted, so I carry two cards). Yes, the exchange rate isn't wonderful, but I always take out P10K at a time so the P200 fee goes further. In the rare event of not being near an ATM that takes Visa I have sent K some cash via World Remit and she has used her Cebuana card to collect it.

In a very poor nation the risk of theft is ever present if you carry a wad of cash; it's much easier to hide a credit card on you than to conceal cash.
