Manchester United's Prima Donas were supposed to have taken to the pitch against their neighbours, Manchester City however the fixture was cancelled due to a rain-soaked pitch. But the game wasn't to have been played in Manchester or indeed in England but in Beijing, China. Five thousand twenty-five and a half air miles away. United's team travelled in two planes one of which made an unscheduled stop 94 miles south of Beijing because heavy rain had closed Beijing's Capital airport to all traffic. Now the players, who arrived late last night, will be boarding another plane - or two - to bring them back to Manchester.

When they arrive back in Manchester, each member of the squad will have accounted for almost two metric tonnes of CO2 to be released in plane journeys alone. What a complete waste of time, money and Carbon Credits when this game could have been played to its final whistle at either club's home ground with their fans in attendance.

United's carbon profligacy is almost on a par with climate change hypocrite, Leonardo Dicaprio, who very recently flew a flew dozen friends from Loa Angeles to Cannes and back for a fund raiser - for climate change (you couldn't make it up!) - a round-trip distance of 12,125.78 air miles (over 2 tonnes CO2 per guest).

I'm guessing that the only reason the match was scheduled to be played in China was for commercial reasons.

A huge CO2 footprint from both teams for sure.

Commercial reasons for the trip, therefore increasing potential employment for some across the world wether in UK, China or in other regions of the world by growth of manufacturing.
It's the way commercial areas work but I guess we could stop importing bananas (yes the carbon footprint is there albeit a lesser degree) and enjoy the many fruits the UK produce.
    The bias is noted

    Losers.

Since I started recording my flights on FlightDiary.net about five years ago:
    • I have flown 366,227 miles, the equivalent distance of 14.7 times around the earth.
    • And through my flights, have been responsible for 75.3 tons of CO2, 4Kg of Methane, and 3.27 Kg of Nitrous Oxide.
    :like:

I am responsible for metric tons of methane... Wether I travel or in bed....

i really have no idea how these tons of CO2 are calculated. a ton of gas seems an awful lot.

How big is a tonne of CO2 and how do they weigh it?

    I never knew that!

It's the quality of the Chinese carry out that counts
