I just checked mine 139/76 which is reasonable.

I had to wear a 24 hour BP monitor after I had a offshore medical, the doctor said my BP was high and she thought she could hear something when she was listening to my heart. Every time I have had my BP checked by the doctor it has been high because I'm always nervous about it. When I wore the BP monitor for 24 hours they found my BP to be normal, the highest readings were actually when I was asleep, probably having nightmares I expect, and the lowest was when I was playing on my PS3.

Taking it at home is the best way to get a true reading, see the link below for the BP monitor from Boots that me and the missus use, I made a little spreadsheet to keep track of our BP. On the monitor we have there is a A & B facility that lets you keep track of two people. The price of the BP monitors is reasonable, I thought I'd paid over a £100 six months back but in the link below it is only £80.00, I must have gone mid range.

The doctor told the missus to monitor her blood pressure for a month after receiving new BP medication, hers is still higher than mine with medication and I smoked for thirty years and drank lots of beer but not anymore, alas.

Its probably not a bad idea for us all to keep tabs on our BP, it is after all the biggest cause of heart attacks.

    Hi Al and Ni Hao.
I read that 80% of salt is in the food we eat and 20% is what we add later.
How do you monitor your salt intake over there in China?

There is a lot of salt and or sugar in food, naturally.

I dont add any. Except on a rare occasion eg fish and chips.

I eat shreddies without sugar. They have sugar in already, once you get used to it you can taste it.

I learnt from my ex wife that food can be flavoursome without adding salt.

I dont have a BP problem but do have a blood sugar problem. I have a sweet tooth.

And blood sugar. So many more people are diabetic these days.

Once in a blue moon we add salt on our chips and that is it.
If salt is the "silent killer", how many people check the salt content of food they buy?

I never have but will do so now.

You make a good point. People perhaps should.

My daughter is a qualified RN and specialises in Diatetics. She always checks the food content. But errs on the side of minimising her intake of preprepared shop food.

The government was saying they were going to simplify the labels on food.

I don't see anything happening yet.

It has taken a while but I have managed to get Mrs Ash to cook home cooked food without added salt and sugar.

Her mom has high blood pressure and is on medication in the Philippines.

She realises now that it sensible for all of us to take care of what we eat.

Shreddies do not have a sugar coating like sugar puffs or frostys as you well know.

My wife has the chocolate shreddies though.

The 1st bp reading is higher than the one taken after 15 mins. That is true, bottom no. must be 80 down but not lower than 60.It's normal we take bp meds , but We must also check the causes why BP rises, there could be an underlying factor.we must thorough discuss with our health providers .Western medication approach on BP becomes a maintenance, meaning you can not stop taking it,but i did!

Hi Mike. Thanks for that. What I should have said was that I have cut down on the 20% added. I am very careful what I eat here when I am outside - I didn't realise when I took this job , that the area is famous for its spicy food - and I cannot stand spicy food!!! Inside my apartment, I cook western food.

Thats another point, Al. We lose control of our salt intake when we eat out. We just dont know what goes into our food in the restaurants we eat at.

I know where you are coming from there. :D

My breakfast right now is porridge in semi skimmed milk. With banana and milk on top. No added salt, sugar and low fat.
