Just thought I'd let folk know the wife's family have received a 30,000php payment for damages to each of their houses caused by typhoon Ruby at Christmas 2014. This is the storm that ran right over the top of the wife's province in Western Samar , north of Tacloban. This storm very nearly wiped out the whole village with storm surge and wind as well as those surrounding it and caused huge amounts of damage compared to Yolanda the previouis year where they where relatively unaffected thankfully.

I've asked but no one as yet can tell me who is paying the money, all they said is a foreign woman and some locals appeared and surveyed peoples houses. I suspect its a charity. We received money for our wooden house as well as there is only half of it left now and leaning at a rakish angle by all accounts. We have split our money up between some of the family. Needless to say the money is a big help to those in the area due to the excessive effects of El Nino.

That's good news, does the Philippine Government put its hand in its pocket or is that a silly question?

I'm trying to find out but I very much doubt it. When we where there last it was all charities that seemed to be carrying out relief work etc.

Got me wondering, can you buy insurance against natural disasters in the Philippines or are the premiums ridiculously high especially if you live in an area prone to natural disasters?

Hmm never thought about that to be honest. I'm sure one of the blokes living / lived out there longer than I would be able to answer that. My guess is is it would be pretty expensive and very restrictive and geared more for the cities rather than farms etc in the middle of no where
