We all have to hope that we never have to live in one of these homes, none of us can be certain of course.

At the end of the day someone has to pay, at an average cost of £30k per year for each home resident who is going to pay for it that's the problem?

At least now we get to keep a £100k which is better than a kick in the teeth I suppose.

Its a difficult issue to be addressed by any Government, for me personally I would accept higher taxes to pay for the NHS and social care as long as I could see that it was beneficial.

Higher taxes and a higher retirement age (both delayed by Tory and Labour governments) is the way to go.

We knew the population was getting older and living longer back in the 80s. It was then that the pension age should have increased to 70 for people aged 40 and under at the time.

Social care SHOULD be provided by the NHS. If we are being asked to pay for this, what next?

Personally, if I were diagnosed with dementia, I would like to take the option of euthanasia. It would allow me to pass on my wealth and estate to my loved ones (after all, that's why I am doing it). It would allow me to die with dignity. It would save money.

Staying alive once in the midst of dementia is neither appealing nor practical for me.

It's time this was also considered as a viable option.

It was meant tongue in cheek, just a way of highlighting how much it costs to stay in a retirement place and what you get for your money. Many practical reasons it wouldn't work of course.

our plan was for my wife to care for my old dad--at home. she is a trained senior carer. it was her idea. he would pay her a salary--and save a fair bit in care home fees. sadly he died a month before she got here---so they never met.

i held power of attorney for him--and managed all his financial affairs. he was awarded Attendance Allowance---just over £300 a month. this plus his state pension and company pension took care of most of the fees. but it was just a care home--not nursing.

Here's an election poster that's guaranteed to put a smug smile on Bluebird's face:

It's fake news dreamt-up by Labour Future, a centrist grassroots Labour Party campaign group, and the NHS have told the activists to cease and desist.

I have to apologise. Last night I called @Markham a second rate wind up merchant. In light of his latest attempt to goad me, I have to concede that I was wrong. I was badly wrong.

Markham is a third rate WUM. Poor effort!

No offence taken, I like to laugh at myself because everybody else does!!!

I sometimes wonder if this forum is purgatory.

Understand much of what you say but personally I don't want a 67 year old fireman or paramedic coming to my aid.

Whilst accepting the reality of our ageing demographic why do I get the feeling that the politicians of today - who enjoyed free higher education (grants!!!), a reasonable retirement age (who wants to work until they die?) and the other positive trappings of the Atlee Labour Government now appear to be raising the drawbridge behind them?

No problem of course if you have wealth - money buys you choices. How many millionaires are there in the current Tory Cabinet - perhaps not as many as under "Call me Dave" (part of the Chipping Norton set don't you know) but still reeking of privilege, entitlement and utter disdain for the majority of ordinary folk.
