More recruitment drives for nurses

Hospital bosses are to fly to Manila next month to recruit 120 nurses from the Philippines to tackle staff shortages and reduce spending on agency workers.

It is part of a dedicated nurse recruitment drive launched at Medway Maritime as a report reveals there were no clear staffing plans in place when A&E was experiencing unprecedented levels of demand during the Christmas and new year period.

Vacancy rates at the hospital remain high and the large turnover of nursing staff is a particular problem. The trust is still spending too much on temporary staff.

I do wonder if the hospitals might consider a recruitment drive amongst Filipina nurses in the Middle East; there are plenty, some will be coming to the end of their contracts, and they have the advantage of experience of working overseas...

Whilst there probably is a good number of nurses in that (happy) situation, recruiting them in the Middle East will, I believe, be fraught with problems and could be viewed as poaching. You may not realise this but, apparently, in certain Arab countries, female nurses are not permitted to leave the hospital compound where they work and live unless they are accompanied by a "minder".

I am well aware! I grew up in the Middle East and visit the Emirates and Saudi Arabia regularly on business. I was thinking more of the use of the social media to advertise to them, and arrange interviews in the Philippines when they return on leave.

There are lots and a good idea. Asawas best friend works in Saudi and I think she would have been a lot better off had she came to the UK.

Financially I'm guessing Filipino nurses are better off in the Middle East but of course we have a much better lifestyle here in the UK.
