Nationwide Building Society introduced mobile banking apps for Android and Apple phones last month and it it is pretty good too - a real life saver if you forgot to take your card reader to the Philippines!

A few caveats - you can only register for mobile phone banking if you are already registered for Internet banking. Registration is instantaneous after your entering your usual Internet banking details. The app then stores your Customer Number. That means it is only possible to use the app for a single customer.

To log in after registration you have to enter 3 digits from your six digit passnumber into the mobile app - so make sure you know your passnumber (you probably don't if you normally log into Internet banking with a card and card reader).

You can only look at your accounts, view statements, move monies between your existing Nationwide accounts and make payments to existing payees; you cannot set up payments to new payees - sensible given that logging in is just a 3 digit process! If you do need to set up a new payee I think you can still log into Internet banking directly on Nationwide's website via your mobile phone's browser.

I am happy to use this app, as my phone is always protected by a password but I may also use an additional password layer by downloading a suitable app from Google Play.
