I hope you and yours enjoy a good day out Keith.

I have fond memories of the Lothian Miners' Gala in Holyrood Park, Edinburgh. Brass bands, sports events, political speakers and of course the beer tent!

Your activism precedes mine by a few years Keith.

I became active in my trade union in the late 70s (aged 18). Many memories - including holding an impromptu car park meeting of 400 staff on the day that Thatcher banned trade unions at GCHQ (reversed many years later), Picketing Tory Party conference at Blackpool (was fun shouting at the Tories as they trooped in for the Thatch love-in!).

One of the saddest days was taking food to one of the local miners wefare clubs on the day the dispute crumbled in 1984. The miners' wives had worked miracles making meals for the local families affected and my union and others had collected money and foodstuffs for months.

Despite the obvious defeat there was an amazing feeling of pride, solidarity and defiance in that hall in Prestonpans.

I cried like a baby after I left the hall...but proudly applauded a day or so later when the Bilston Glen colliery band led the striking miners back to work. The pit was a so called "super pit" - modern, efficient with decades of high quality accessible reserves. It closed a few years later.
